I have to say that dosage concerns me. My 15-year-old son just needed a cleanout recently and his dosage was ( & still is at current time) 17 grams. He weighs 165 pounds. Unless there are different strengths? As far as actually taking it, that shouldn't be a problem as you can mix it in juice (at least 8 oz) and it's virtually tasteless.michelesbrock wrote: I have a 4 year old, 45 lb. autistic daughter with significant GI issues. Her GI specialist recommendeded that she take 17g of Miralax

a day for 7 days prior to her scope. Has anyone ever heard of this or have any other recommendations that I can call him back with? She does not take pills and won't drink things that taste bad because of sensory issues. I am VERY nervous about the procedure as well as his prep recommendations. Thank you.

I have never heard of that. 17 grams sounds like too much especially

for 7 days although when my daughter couldn't have a b for 7+ days

the GI dr said that 17 grams was ok for a couple of days. I have had

to on numerous occasions get second opinions for my 6 yr old

especially if the initial opinion came from Children's Hospital in

Phila. Especially when 4 of their specialists said that my daughter

needed a shunt placed in her brain & we took her to the hospital for

dehydration.

This is just my opinion, but I would get another dr's opinion on

this procedure as well as the prep prior to the scoping. I am

guessing that you daughter needs a colonoscopy?

Good luck & even if you need a 3rd opinion keep trying. Remember

that you are your childs sdvocate & that drs are not always right.

Most of the time they are but it's ok to question what they tell

you. They are human & make mistakes & have differing opinions on how

to treat patients. You know what's best for your child.

Again, this is jmo.

Good luck.

I think that is what she wrote though--17 grams a day, for 7 days.

I think depending on the font you have it looked more like 179 ??

That's what I first thought when I saw her post because the g looked

like a 9 to me.

Some kids take 17 grams per day regardless of scope prep or not... 17

grams is considered the adult dosage of miralax for daily purposes.

My son had been on 17 grams per day for a while.

For a scope, my only concern )aside from the fact that I don't like

miralax in general), but just saying my only concern would be that if

the 17 grams pushes her to the point of diarrhea, she will need

electrolyte beverages to drink during that time to prevent problems

with electrolyte imbalance. Some docs have developed a scope prep

that involves using miralax and gatorade because they know that

drinking the colyte or golytely is difficult to get consumed. So I

would ask more questions about that scope prep and ask if she is going

to need to drink an electrolyte drink like Gatorade or anything.

Good luck with the prep and the scope too! I hope that it will yield

some answers for you!!!

Thank you for the insight. I am not sure what I will do. My daughter doesn't like juice, believe it or not. The GI specialist gave me the option of 17g of Miralax for 7 days or ducolax (?) for three, but the later is a pill. Gatorade is out of the question (she hates it). I need to figure something out as the scope is only 13 days away!

Michele, How about talking to him about a liquid diet for a day or so and maybe some ex lax it looks like chocolate? It's not even a question of gatorade, you don't want to give miralax to your child. I have fda papers with 600 people all having reactions including renal failure, tics, seizures, coma, and death. Why use a toxic chemical when you could use magnesius citrate, or phoshphate soda. trust me, it's not worth the risk! JeanieMichele Brock wrote: Thank you for the insight. I am not sure

Isn't dulcolax a suppository? Depending on whether it would freak her

out, the suppository/enema route definitely has advantages healthwise.

Are they giving her an enema in addition to miralax? When my son

started miralax, 7 days of 17 g was certainly nothing like a cleanout--

in fact, he was pretty full of poop after taking that dose for months.

I guess what I'm wondering is, what is the GI expecting from this

preparotory regime?

The 17 G for 7 days was suppose to be a cleanout with no enema. A suppository would be great, but the GI specialist did not recommend one. I will call and ask if one is available. Thank you so much for all of the information. I am also wondering if magnesium citrate in higher doses would work. She takes that daily to keep her regular.

In my personal experience, dulcolax suppositories (they can be intense for my DS who is 6, definitely cut them for a young child) and magnesium citrate are both more effective than 17 g a day of miralax. My DS took almost a full bottle a day during his cleanout, but he's a kid who was already on 34 g a day of miralax and still needed a cleanout (and he didn't have a hard impaction that could be felt or seen on xray). Mineral oil and flax seed oil are both as effective as miralax. 1 Tbsp. mineral oil or 2 tbsp. flaxseed oil are about equivalent to 17 g. miralax.
