Guest guest
nice debate on topic. The demand for quality food has not been prevalent for many years. Hence the farmer moves to the market. I agree that the consumer needs to drive the market...but the government does play a role through the farm payment system, education and election procedure. A politician does not get elected on quality of milk but rather the price of the milk. And the consumer can not see a difference in quality of one milk jug Vs. the quality of another. I spent 3 days going door to door in attempt to understand my local market for my all grass milk. The town I went to is located 20 miles from the farm. This is the closest population center. It is legal to sell my 'fresh' milk but on farm sales only. The customer has to come to my farm and bring their own container. The objections to going to the farm to buy my milk were as follows: 1) Inconvenient; both parents work and it is much easier to go down the street to pick up the milk. 2) Education; most people have conflicting information on proper nutrition 3) Fear; the populous do not know that it is legal and safe to drink 'fresh' milk I can over come most of these objections. The most difficult objection to over come is the convenient factor. I have ability to service the customer if the laws would allow..but my hands are tied by the laws of the land. And most people choose convenience over quality and community farmer support. I thank this group and many of my other customers for their support and appreciation of the butter products I legally sell by mail order. hey.. on another topic.. I will put out this years notice on contract ordering turkeys, goose, duck later this month.. keep an eye out for it Dave Wetzel
