Hi Janel!!! First let me say I am sorry your little guy is going through all this!!! Stay strong!! My first thought is you mentioned you dont feel there is a connection between shots and constipation!! I wanted to mention that the typical response/reaction to vacs starts an average of 1-2 months after(this is when it is more obvious). Just consider that possiblity, especially if he has any more due!!! Any form of illness after vac's is a symptom/caution of the shots affecting/lowering the immune. We figured out that our son's constipation issues started after his first DTaP and got worse after each round. The mmr just about destroyed his gi tract. You said he was dx with withholding stools?? Although this is true with some I feel leary when something does work such as miralax etc. if they are withholding then even that wouldnt work!! I would wonder about possibe muscle/nerve issues in the intestinal track. Little motility, the stool just sits in there, hardens, etc. If

suppositories/enemas dont really work write away, that means it(hard stool/blockage) is high in the upper gi and possibly that is why it doesnt work(this would also confirm the not holding). Vomiting after an enema could be from being distressed from the procedure or cramping. Something we discovered late was that rice is very constipating, also milk/dairy, foods should be with caution. So that was immediatly taken out of his diet, the hardest for us to get rid of is the dairy(ice creame seems to really have an affect). You mentioned allergies to foods(you suspect), food allergies are actually mini allergic reactions. Allergic reactions(my son had to vacs) and some allergies are in the same family. When someone has an allergic reaction(mild or severe reactions), the results are the major organs being attacked/damaged, the gi being the prime organ. This would slowy or immediatly(my son) cause issues. Something I would highly recommend for him is to try some aloe vera

juice(whole form). It can taste unpleasant but can be hid in some foods/drinks. Aloe vera has really helped our son in the healing of his gi and better bowel movements. It is loaded with so many minerals etc. and works as a natural laxative(this is whole form), the distilled types tend to remove a lot of the ingredients that our kids need. We use 1ounce, twice a day, when needed. We have realized that when supplementing with some things, it should probably be when needed with some things. To start with aloe is ok to use daily untill things get working and then taper off and use as needed. Aloe vera juice is also a great immune booster!!! Garlic(we use small chopped form in jar) is also great for the gi, among so many things, super natural antibiotic, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, natural laxative also, I consider garlic a wonder herb/food. The more natural form the better. It needs to be crushed within minutes of consuming to really have affective affects. My son is

on pureeds/doesnt chew and is easy to get in him, he just swallows his food and doesnt even know he has had it. Make sure and crush/smoosh shortly befor giving. Can be hid in so many things. My son for the first time(winter) is not in and out of hospitals for illness, seizures, etc. Has had these things, but so mild he has recovered on his own with I believe the items I mentioned! Our towns clinic/hospital has been booked/buisy and my son has not been a patient so far:). I have also been giving him Vitamin C in somewhat high doses 2-3 thousand mg a day(he is 7yrs). Our bodies excrete what is not needed and so it is not toxic and also helps with stool movements(loosens the stool). Well I hope and pray your son does better and I just wanted to let you know some things that has helped our son. Not perfect, but great improvements. The gi takes some time to recover/heal! All I can say is I wish it were that easy. Unfortunately suppositories and enemas do not work on him. And he started to develop a reaction to them now, he vomits after enemas.Janel __________________________________________________

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. Thanks everyone for the support. is still backed up despite giving her the little tummies. She's constantly smearing. I'm just wondering why she has had this difficulty with constipation since she was a couple of months old? I've never gotten an answer from her pediatrician. At this point, should I request that she go to a gastrointerologist? I had tried cutting out dairy like my doctor suggested but I don't think that's the problem. Right now, she loves to eat vegetables like broccoli, carrots and green beans, so I've been giving her lots of it and it's still not helping. She used to eat lots of fruit but lately she refuses to eat much of it. She's not eating a whole lot lately and is very, very fussy because she's constipated and doesn't feel well. My mom told me today that she doesn't think looks well and that I should call the doctor. I think she's lost some weight (but it may just be that she's getting taller). She's so thin - 4 toddler top and an 18/ 24 month waist. I'm just so frustrated at this situation. She asked me this morning, "mommy, why does my tummy hurt?" I don't get why she can't go. Her younger sister has a huge apetite and has a large bowel movement at least two to three times a day. I just want to make her better once and for all.

Thanks again,

-- re: the smearing-- what does she currently take for her constipation right now? Mineral oil? Miralax? Lactulose? Remind me again... I know with mineral oil, you can expect smearing if the dose is too much... if she's on miralax or lactulose, what is the dose? At this point, I would take her to a GI specialist but also perhaps one that would work with either a metabolic workup or a nutritional workup, i.e. so you would know, is she digesting her food well, does her body produce enough digestive enzymes to digest her food, can some stool testing be done to see if there are imbalances in yeast and bacteria and/or is there pathogenic bacteria present. I would also look into testing for celiac to see if she has that, because you're right... she shouldn't feel so bad, her tummy shouldn't hurt like that, and so you do have to try to find other opinions. If one GI doc doesn't seem to be able to help or seem too concerned,

then try to find another one. If you want to post what state you live in, perhaps someone on this board can make a recommendation of someone who sees their child. She's takes 17 grams of miralax daily. Periodically I've put mineral oil into her drinks - 1 tablespoon when she hasn't gone in several days. I usually do that for about three days. She hasn't had that though for awhile.

The enemas seemed to help get her going. Since last week, she's been producing a good sized bowel movement everyday. Very liquidy. But she's still smearing her underwear. My hubby says she's fine because right now she's going everyday on the potty and I shouldn't worry over the smearing and that it's normal. His opinion on the matter is that she was born early and just needs time to grow out of it. I don't know. Is it o.k. for her to be smearing so much? Maybe I'm just worrying too much. I will ask the doctor if he will recommend her to a GI. She has only seen pediatricians so far.

Smearing can happen with mineral oil... I'm wondering if part of the smearing now is because she has too large of a dose of miralax, and it is just causing the stool to be so loose that it squeaks out, i.e. putting a lot of pressure on the rectum and then because it is so soft, it squeaks through? I'll just put that idea forth for you to consider. If you think it might be the case, then what about lowering the dose, and doing a divided dose through the day, i.e. either two smaller doses or three smaller doses, and see if that helps. Because 17 grams was the adult-tested dose. In the Files section there is one small study on kids where they used a very small amount of miralax. Have you ever tried her before on a smaller dose? How long was she on the smaller dose? What kind of results did you see? W CHRISTOPHER LOY

When she was taking half a capful once a day, she didn't produce a movement. I'll try dividing the dose into two smaller doses like you're suggesting and see how that goes. Thanks so much for the advice. This group has been so helpful to us.
