We have a mall walker program here too...I know quite a few who do it. It is about 14 miles from me...I like riding my bike down there sometimes but do not walk there.

Some of the indoor retail malls allow a mall walkers program. At our neighborhood mall the management opens the doors to the mall at about 6:30am to 7:00 am and the mall walkers group is allowed to complete laps of the entire mall,

Bill

Here at our mall they open the doors for walkers at 4:30 AM

I have walked here many times. Most of the area is covered with carpet making it easier on the joints.

Good morning Y'all and Happy Mother's day to all the Mothers.

Only in America! How can someone consider a walk in the mall as their daily exercise? What about some fresh air? The only reason I can think of for not walking outside is if it dangerous for some reason. Bernd dougpapa@... schrieb: Some of the indoor retail malls allow a mall walkers program. Only in America is probably right. America is not as walk friendly as many other countries. I lived in England for 3 years and it was a wonderful place to walk. I lost over 80 pounds in the three years I lived there and that was with the birth of 2 children. We don't have walking paths to the next city, we don't have proper sidewalks, we can't walk to town with out getting run over. The mall offers many a safe, climate controlled place to walk. I found this very important when I was pushing a stroller. I tried to walk at the city park but I actually bent the handlebar to my stroller because the walking path was gravel. We do get fresh air :) but many don't have that option if they live in larger towns.

in the winter here it's frequently 40 degrees with a stiff wind andraining. call me a weanie, but i'd be walking in the mall if it wasnt25 miles away.

Laurie:

You can call me a weanie too

When it is cold and dark I would much rather put on my shorts and drive to the mall than dress for the cold and walk outside.

Fresh air is a great thing and certainly preferable. I'm glad I have a nice neighborhood to walk in.

I'm not sure for all the reasons for walking indoors but it's very popular. Some people live in areas where the weather is very cold and stormy in the winter and very hot and humid in the summer so indoor walking is good for them. There's also the social aspect as in some malls there're lots of people walking and if that draws some people out to walk, it's a good thing.

Some people may not live near areas that are safe due to bad people or dogs, etc. It may not be safe due to traffic and/or road concerns.

I think that if walking indoors works for someone and they wouldn't otherwise walk if they didn't walk in the mall, then it's good they walk in the mall. Whatever works.

Hi Bernd,

It's a complex subject, walking outdoors. In our news we saw a

female jogger eaten by an aligator in canal in Florida last week,

someone saw a person sitting on the edge of the canal wall, and the

persons arm were found inside the reptiles stomach. In Canada,

Alberta's Rocky Mountains, a man was mauled by a bear while mountain

biking, last week. People are fast losing their lifes, both skilled

outdoor people and those new to the outdoors, all are at risk. I am

sure you have large cats and bears in Germany, use your imagination,

and I think you understand the benefit of indoor mall walking. Smog

is a big concern in my city, which occurs in the winter also. The

warm air full of smog gets trapped by a layer of cold air above the

city region and can last for days at a time if the upper cold air is

not moving. Pollution particles in the air displace oxygen and make

it difficult to breath when exercising.

Liz, take a self-defence course, like Karate. That will add to your sense of personal security and your independence. With that under your belt, you can do whatever you want. Living in fear of the 'boogie man' is a terrible way to live. BerkBecki Engstrom wrote: From: "arkiegirlagain" Date: Thu May 11, 2006 Subject: Hello from New MemberHi, I'm Liz. ... You could try the mace that many other people have suggested and when weather isn't that

great, you could do in-home walking! I have been doing Sansons's "Walk Away the Pounds" program since January. I've only lost 13 lbs. But, I've also lost many inches, too! And, I've gained a great sense of pride in myself. You can find many of 's tapes at stores like Wal-Mart. She also has a website: http://www.lesliesansone.com/index.htm. Liz, I do understand you don't want to give up walking outside! I wouldn't want to either! Keep posting with us! Becki

My husband was stationed in the Munich area while in the Air Force, and loved it but talked about how cold it got in the winter. Your grandmother must be a very stoic lady if she walks outside during the winter.

Like I said safety would be a reason for indoor walking. Not a rainy day though. I have an 83 year old grandmother who walks in her neighborhood every day. For longer walks she goes to the zoo, senior citizens can get annual tickets really cheap here.
