I haven't met a yak in person yet (though there are several farms in driving distance so I'm trying to talk ROb into a " field trip " to visit yaks) but this site says " Yaks are very intelligent, quiet, and gentle. They have a developed sense of hearing, smell, and sight, and are curious to investigate everything in their vicinity. Yaks learn and retain behaviors such as trailering, packing, pulling, and being groomed. Yaks' horns are not dangerous, and can be used as handles onto which to tie things. I got to ride on an ostrich once! I think I might weigh too much to do that now, though. I was surprised to see how friendly ostriches are. I had thought from looking at them that they would be mean but they weren't! >For just mowing your lawn, I recommend a few sheep though. I'm very happy >with ours. Here in this part of Idaho, you don't have a lawn unless you specially plant one and take lots of care of it. This is dry mountain country with mostly dirt and sagebrush and some scrub grass. Here are some examples of undeveloped land around here: http://www.sparrowrose.com/photos/20021003/lookingupatredhill.html http://www.sparrowrose.com/photos/20021003/goingdown.html http://www.sparrowrose.com/photos/20021003/underletter.html We aren't sure yet what we're going to do for landscaping, but we know we don't want a regular lawn because they are so much trouble to keep alive in the high desert. So if we plant any kind of grass, it will be specifically as graze for animals. I like goats better than sheep, especially angora goats! (Rob hates goats. He knows this for a fact because his step-mother had goats. He sometimes takes me to the petting zoo so I can feed the goats but he said he doesn't really want any in his yard. LOL!) I do like sheep a lot, though. (I was even born in the year of the sheep!) >Inger - still miffed at the fox for eating all our peacocks. :-( Awwww! That's so sad! My grandfather had some geese that he loved very much and the coyotes ate them. My mother told me that it's the only time in her whole life she'd ever seen my grandfather cry was when his geese got eaten. :-( Sparrow
