I found out the other day that last year my Grandma had part of her thyroid removed. She had told me that she had hyPOthyroid. So I was asking her questions about it and I told her that doesn't make sense because you don't get RAI for hyPOthyroid. She said that's what she had. I asked her WHEN the doctor told her she had that and she said after they did the RAI. Of course. I asked her if she had ThyCa and she said no and she asked that specifically. So I told her that what happened is she had hyPERthyroidism and they treated it by taking out part of her thyroid. {She was in the hospital getting a pacemaker for her heart problem that kept getting worse despite treatment when they discovered the hyPERthyroidism. She has had a heart problem for DECADES!} Anyways, now of course she has hyPOthyroidism and is being treated with levothyroxine. She keeps upping her dose as her doctor says... about every 6 weeks and her TSH level is still high ... and she doesn't feel very good. I gave her all the websites and info that I have.

So here is my question... can her hyPERthyroidism be a hereditary factor for my hyPOthyroidism? Also, my Dad suddenly died of a massive heart attack at the age of 49 while riding his mountain bike. He looked like the classic hyPERthyroid person {undiagnosed} now that I know what hyPERthyroidism looks like. He used to wake up at night with heart palpitations. Anyways, is it possible that he ended up with a heart problem that killed him due to an undiagnosed/treated thyroid problem and how does that play into my risk factors?

in Wa, awaiting test results from a thyroid ultrasound...
