Hi and welcome. I'm a fairly new member to this group as well. I

think that you need to get a doc who will take you seriously.

Having a nodule that grows and shrinks and grows again along with

antibodies can be treated. It's great that the kelp is working for

you but hashi's can go from hypo to hyper and you need monitoring

and a doc in your court if it does. I understand your feeling down

about your body attacking itself. Mine attqacked my thyroid recently

after years of attacking my joints and my rproductive system. I

still have a " phantom " ovary that despite having been removed grows

back (ovarian tissue and cysts) they have been in htree times since

the hysto and still it comes back. Kind of like your nodule. Hang

in there, find a good doc and read as much as time, with two small

kids, will let you about thyroid problems so you'll know when

something is worse or better. It's your body, who better than you

to advocate for it.

Lucy,

I do not blame you for feeling frustrated. I went thru years of frustration regarding thyroid symptoms. I was dx with a thyroid condition at 16. I felt fine even after giving birth to three children in seven years. Then my medication was switched and symptoms returned. Do you have copies of your tests results? The reason I am asking is a number of doctors said my labs were fine when they were not. Some labs/doctors use a high normals. This happened to me. Many doctors here consider a TSH range of 4-5 normal. That left me to contend with unexplained symptoms for years until I saw my sister's endo. She explained a normal TSH is around 2. Mine TSH was 6. She treated me for two months and instructed my doctor about continued treatment. My internist ignored her treatment suggestions and I became worse. A few months later, I found and began treating with a good endo here and am getting better.

Some doctors do not treat Hashimoto. Others do. Continue looking for a helpful doctor. It took 10 years for me to find them, but was worth it. I asked people and doctors for referrals.

Congratulations of losing weight and determining what works for you. In spite of Hashimoto treatment, diet and exercise, I have been successful in losing weight.

Hello everyone.

I am 32 and think I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

My Mum was very poorly for a number of years and eventually

diagnosed in her 30's, my Nana and my aunt also have it.

Me. I always had loads of energy, did a physical job and went to the

gym on top. My weight always hung around 8 stone and I never got

poorly. At 28 I fell pregnant with my first child and had a TSH test

which was middle of the range. At 30 I fell pregnant again and in

March 2005 had my second child. It was hard work looking after 2 and

I was tired but I expected that. By December I'd started to feel

more like me again and was really looking forward to 2006. I got a

gym membership and was ready for action. However, in January I got a

chest infection and although antibiotics made a slight improvement I

never seemed to recover fully. By April I was starting to worry. I

was so exhausted I was concerned about my childrens safety, I was

cold despite being dressed like the mitchelin man and my bones ached

so I went to the gp and told him everything. I gave blood and then

awaited results. Eventually I phoned the receptionist because I

hadn't heard anything and she told me there was nothing wrong with

me and I don't need to go back. At the beginning of June I developed

a lump in my neck. It started as a pea sized lump and grew to about

an inch long in the space of 3 days although it constantly changes

size. I went to another gp who refered me to see and ear, nose and

throat specialist. He took a biopsy, I gave more blood and had an

ultra sound. The sonographer said it looked like a cyst, I asked why

it kept getting bigger and smaller and she said maybe it bled. The

consultant said I had a goitre but my thyroid levels where all

normal so there was nothing to do. He couldn't tell me why I had it

or what had triggered it, he said it wasn't anything I did or do and

there was nothing I could do to make it go away, my tiredness and

other symptoms were totally unrelated so I'd need to return to my gp

for those. He didn't seem to understand my question about why it

changes size. As I was about to leave he added almost as an

afterthought that I had the antibodies but there was nothing I could

do about that.

As I didn't want to do nothing I changed my diet. I've almost given

up wheat, dairy and coffee and eat lots of fruit, veg, nuts, seeds,

brown rice etc and also take a kelp supplement. Almost straight away

my energy levels returned and I started losing weight (10lb in 6wks).

I have so many questions about it all. I don't like the thought that

my body is attacking itself and can't believe there is nothing I can

do about it. Does anyone have any inspirational stories?

Thanks for listening.

Hi Judy,

Thanks for replying. I'm sorry to hear things have been hard for so

long for you. Do you mind me asking about this comment?

> Having a nodule that grows and shrinks and grows again along with

Can it? Do you know how? Do other peoples grow and shrink? I thought

if I knew what caused it to grow and shrink I'd be able to control it

and shrink it and maybe even it would go away.

I have the TSH one taken a couple of months before the lump came

I'm glad things are getting better for you, it really good to hear

that people don't just get worse and worse.

How is Hashimotos treated? With thyroxine tablets? Or is there

another way?

In

Well done , Weight loss is hard enough without extra

difficulties.

Lucy,

My nodule shunk and enlarged. Taking the correct dose of thyroid medication caused it to shrink and too much medication caused it to enlarge. Shrinking and enlarging may have to do with hormonal imbalance.

My sister had one nodule refused to take medication and developed a second one.

Hi ,

Thank-you for answering me and telling me about your nodule

enlarging and shrinking as well. I've not been able to find any

information about it and thought either I was the only one, or I was

making it up.

Before I saw the consultant my nodule was getting quite large and

sometimes when I was in bed it felt like something was tight round

my neck I didn't know if that was psychological or not. Although I

have felt depressed at times I am not depressed, its the first thing

the drs ask about though and I'm sure they are all trying to pin PND

on me, they are very quick to prescribe anti-depressants here.

Thanks for the information on the other vitamins. I kind of have

this hope that if I take the right supplements my body will be able

to balance itself and become healthy, I'm not sure if thats possible

but I want to hold off on thyroid pills if I can.

Hope the test results are what you are hoping on Monday.

And sorry for the weight loss blunder.

Hi Lucy,

I am 32 years old and have just been diagnosed with Hashimotos

Thyroiditis. I would definately advise you to go to another doctor

and get them to check for antibodies, just to know if you have

hashimotos or not? I think it does not matter if I take a kelp

supplement or not as i have an autoimmune disease and it won't help

my thyroid as it is being attacked by my immune system, my naturopath

told me not to take it. Do you take Selenium, I was told that

Hashimotos and Selenium go hand in hand, it is vital for healthy

function of the immune system. I have just started a bowel detox, a

healthy diet that consists of alot of fruit & vege juices, nuts,

seeds, gluten and dairy free. I have all the symptoms but do not have

a lump in my throat...

I'd like to know if you do get diagnosed with Hashimotos as my sister

also has a lump in her throat and told that she has nothing to worry

about.

Look forward to hearing more from you

Funny you should mention "Glandular Fever" - I had to look it up too, we call it Mononucleosis in the States. Yes, I DID have a very serious case of this at 21. At 24 my body went nuts - gained weight, got acne, periods went crazy. No one diagnosed me with anything back then though I knew something was wrong. I've often wondered if that's what started all of this. I wasn't diagnosed with Hashi's until this summer - at 36.

My endocrinologist also put me on selenium and Acidophalus and a bunch of other stuff. SHe also said that it's believe now that the bowel helps regulate / control the immune system. So a bowel cleanse seems to fit into that.

I'll have to check out that book and see what it says. Sounds interesting. I'll also be curious to see who else has had Mono.

Hi ,

I've just started taking Selenium (about a week I think) and my skin

seems so much smoother!

I do have anti-bodies but I don't know how many and was told as all

my blood tests were 'normal' it didn't matter.

I've just been reading everything I can find about it on the net. Do

you avoid goitrogens like brocolli, cabbage etc? I eat huge amounts

of this type of veg and have done for ages thinking it was good for

me.

My lump gets bigger and smaller. Last week I really fell off the

wagon and binge on crisps, potatoes and cheese and other things bad.

In the night I woke up and my lump was sticking out and as big as an

egg. My period came the next day so I don't know whether it was the

bad food or the hormones that made it like it. It hasn't been going

as small as it can since.

I'm seeing the consultant again in November for monitoring (more

bloods I guess) and will try and get some sense out of him or a

referral to someone else. He is the Ears, Nose and Throat dr but I

don't know if that covers thyroid or not.
