Guest guest
Hi Jeannie- Let the parents know that the "fits" will begin to reduce in frequency once he is off his sensitivities completely for about 4-6 weeks. Right now he is in a dose and withdrawl cycle that makes him more prone to agitation when he does not have dairy. Gluten is often a problem for these children as well, via the same mechanism. Ultimately, the gut needs to be addressed. Only with impaired digestion are whole proteins like gluten and casein allowed to get into the bloodstream and interact with opiod receptors. He may (more likely than not) have other issues going on in his gut; consider a GI health panel or CDSA to look at his overall function in this area. Symptomatically, when he has a fit, consider Calm-gen or Passiflora Plex. There are also points on the upper outer part of the ear that stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes doing the ear exercises you would do for otitis media can be very calming. I have one little girl with sensory issues who asks for these when she is up and upset in the middle of the night...they put her right back to sleep.Good luck! We did a Carroll FIT on him and his primary food sensitivity is dairy, which I suspected because when this child gets into a fit one of the only two things that can bring him down is a glass of milk (the other is lying on his mother's chest). So I am thinking that the opiate receptors are probably being bound by casein exorphins and that is why he is soothed by the milk. I have to break this news to the parents today and I am gathering ideas to support him when he does decompensate- a "substitute" for the dairy, if you will. So far I am thinking nervinum vagum and rescue remedy. Another doc suggested the Weleda avena sativa drops. What else would you all do? I really feel like I need to give them some solid tools to use as I remove one of the only things that can console this child! The family is very compliant and committed to helping this child through these challenges without any pharmaceuticals. Also, if any of you have or know of a clear, concise explanation of the casein-opiate receptor relationship I would love to have access to that. There are a variety of things on the internet but something brief and from a medical source would be preferable in my opinion. Many Thanks!!Jeannie Achuff, NDBerkeley, CAOriginsofHealthNaturalMedicine.com
