FEAT NT presents Saturday June 18th:

The following workshop presented by BCBA Gail Wayman, is an excellent

opportunity for school professionals, SLP's, private clinic professionals,

therapists, and parents to learn how signing can be used to facilitate

language.

Participants will learn …

1. The basic verbal operants as defined by Skinner

2. Why it is important to teach verbal behavior across all of the verbal

operants

3. The difference between prompted speech and spontaneous speech

4. Why children with autism sometimes learn to speak in response to another

person, yet never develop spontaneous speech

5. Why emphasis on vocal imitation alone may not lead to functional speech

6. How to “capture†a child’s motivation in order to teach spontaneous

speech

7. That the use of augmentative communication can increase the likelihood

that a non-vocal learner will learn functional and spontaneous speech

8. Criteria for choosing augmentative communication

9. Advantages and disadvantages of a topography based communication

system(sign) vs. a selection based communication system (PECS)

10. How to teach sign (ASL) to children with special needs

11. That sign can be successfully taught to children with little or no

imitation skills
