This is the third European study that has failed to replicate the US results. One reason may be that the original study involved patients from a specific US outbreak of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the mid 1980s. It is possible that XMRV was involved in this outbreak but does not play a substantial role in most cases of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome elsewhere, the Dutch authors conclude.
