Hi I'm new here, but this post caught my eye because my Ivy, age 2.10 loves to rip up magazines. We don't let her have newspaper, because the ink is toxic and very messy. Magazines don't make dust either. :-) We get lots of used ones at second hand stores and the library for pennies...she goes through several a day. *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* ~Satina ~ My business: http://www.dreamweaverteam.com My business resource ezine: /group/AnotherCoolTool My AIM name: TidalWaveSatina My Yahoo ID: satinas Put me on your buddy list! :-) *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*
Guest guest
Hi Satina, Thanks for your message. We don't let Hannah rip newspapers, either, because they are messy. We use magazenes, too, as well as used computer paper. And I also wanted to mention that although *perhaps* paper dust could be harmful if inhaled for an hour..... we would never let Hannah do *any* self-stim for an hour! :0) I'm talking about 5 or 10 minutes here and there. Guest guest
As I said before, my son used to do this a lot. But for the past few days, he has taken to crinkling all the paper he sees into little balls. Including papers that are important to me. Sigh. I'm assuming this is along the same lines as the ripping, and he enjoys the feeling or something. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/2654/ Re: Digest Number 197 In a message dated 1/27/01 8:38:50 AM !!!First Boot!!!, autism-aspergers writes: Get back to us Andy after sucking in an hour's worth of newspaper-rippin' >dust. > >Even those who intellectually know that the cat is causing the child's >allergies or asthma still rationalize keeping the pet in the house. > >Paper tearing is a health hazard to everyone in the house unless done >upwind of a ventilation system or outside. Guest guest
I just ripped several magazine covers and pages: magazines do make paper dust. The lacquers and dyes used in magazines would have to be, say, 10,000 times more toxic/irritating than newspaper "ink" which is usually soya-based (think: "thick soya sauce"). Then there are the chemicals used to process all paper, especially mercury. ------------------- On Sat, 27 Jan 2001 04:05:35 EST tidalwaverider@... writes: In a message dated 1/27/01 8:38:50 AM !!!First Boot!!!, autism-aspergers writes: Get back to us Andy after sucking in an hour's worth of newspaper-rippin' >dust. > >Even those who intellectually know that the cat is causing the child's >allergies or asthma still rationalize keeping the pet in the house. > >Paper tearing is a health hazard to everyone in the house unless done >upwind of a ventilation system or outside. Guest guest
Hey welcome to our list. I have 4 boys, ages 4, 5,6 and 10 all with aspergers and autism. My 3 youngest love to rip things and we use old magazines. They rip and it's a sensory thing. I think it helps them release some built up tension. I have never seen any dust so far. So I think it's safe. Look forward to hearing more from you, God bless, Sharon(moderator)
