Hi Jan -- you're going to hear this alot, but it's true -- this is a

lifestyle choice, not just dropping those 30 pounds.

I am using Bill 's Success Journal. In the front cover I signed it,

dated it and labeled it " Volume I " -- knowing there will be more volumes to

come.

Congratulations on making the decision to return to BFL. Best wishes for

reaching your goals in 2003!

Hi Liz,

Glad to have you join our BFL list. You will get lot's of support here.

Also, people will speak to you honestly and directly so be ready! ;)

I do most of my exercise at home. I have an incline bench (that I found in

perfect condition on the tree lawn across the street from my house [YES!]. I

purchased several sets of dumbells from a discount sporting goods store for

..49 a pound. (3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35). I go to the gym for the

treadmill, but you can do other things at home.

Kep on posting!

Hi Liz

I recently started this program and I too do all my workouts at home.

Granted we have a lot of equipment here so that makes it easier. Even if I

had the time, I prefer to work out at home. There is just something about

grunting in public that I don't like :)

Good Luck

My wife and I work out exclusively at home. We have a set of PowerBlocks and

a " Body by Jake " bench.

Now for cardio we ride a bike, but our boys are old enough to stay home by

themselves for 30 minutes. You could do something like jumping rope at home

for cardio.

Hi Liz:

Welcome to this group. I think it's a great source of motivation and

information. I'm a SAHM of 4 1/2 yr. old twins. A gym membership isn't in

our budget right now, so I work out at home too. My husband had a decent set

of dumbbells with weight plates that I can change easily (slows my workout

down just a bit) for each set. I use a regular kitchen chair for any

" seated " exercise because I don't have a bench yet. I do my chest presses on

the floor. I don't get the same range of motion you might with a bench, but

I'm seeing improvements and I can feel the stress on my muscles in that

position.

For cardio, I do have a square aerobic step that I use and I found a

mini-trampoline/rebounder at a garage sale for $3 that I actually like a lot.

It keeps it low impact for me and with a lot of extra body weight right now

that helps joints, etc. I do a variety of movements -- jog in place, jumping

jacks, jumping rope motion, etc. that varies my heart rate. If I get bored,

I will take a few trips up and down our staircase and that gets my heart

going too.

I'm wimpy about the cold, but when my kids were littler, I often just threw

them in the stroller and did walk/run exercises.

Lastly -- check your local library. Mine is stocked with a decent selection

of aerobic videos -- allowing me a variety of workouts at little cost ($1

rental fee for the week).

Good luck with your program. BFL works if you do the program. I just

finished my third week and I've dropped 10 pounds already (208.5 now) -- I

know its a lot of water weight, but I'm on my way.........

Hi Liz!

I have found my motivation in a little different way than some

mentioned here and thought I'd share. I have a very long way to go

(over 80# of fat to lose) and focusing on the fact that I don't like

what I look like now or focusing on what I want to look like and not

getting there fast enough - sometimes depresses me and kicks me off

track.

So, what I do is focus on something that I really want to do - but

can't physically do now. For instance, used to love to hike. While

I can do moderate hiking, with all the extra weight - I really can't

handle the hard trails right now. And I'd love to be able to start

rock climbing. I know that to do this - I have to not only lose

weight (i.e. keep my nutrition in line) but also build up my strength

and endurance. This makes the exercise just as important as the

nutrition for me.

Maybe if you can think of something like that. Or because it sounds

like you're very devoted to your son, maybe there's some physical

activity you'd like to be able to do with him?

Hope this helps!

I am looking into buying a set of weights this weekend, but a bench

just isn't in my budget yet. Hopefully I can do without one for a

little while.

Thanks so much for the encouragement Janeen! I absolutely LOVE this

group! I am " officially " starting the program on Monday. I finally

completed the book this morning, and am ready to get started.

Hi,

A picnic table bench will work great too. Just add some pads or

throw pillows for comfort. If you don't have one, maybe a friend or

neighbor has one they aren't using for the winter.

In a pinch, a sturdy ironing board will do, if you provide proper

support under it (you don't want to lose both your weight bench and

ironing board at the same time!).

my daughter loves to work out with me. which i think is great. I have a 9

year old girl who is into gymnastics so she is very strong from that and

has a six pack already that I am sooooooooo jealous of. but she is totally

into the being strong. she absolutely loves it that she can do 10 pull ups

and her older brother can barely do one !!!!

My son I think would like it, but he is very self conscience. He basically

has no upper body strength, and despite me telling him the way to get it is

to work for it, he won't. he is embarrassed that I can curl about 3 times

the amount he can. I keep telling him, we all started somewhere and the fact

that I lift for upper 2 times a week plays a big role in me being able to

keep going up in the amounts. But, alas, he is 13 and knows more than I...so

he won't listen :)

Welcome!

I'm just on Day 16 and I've found this group to really helpful.

I don't have kids, but I admire your willingness to start and commit

in spite of the challenge of a child 24/7.

just a thought - my gym has day care at no extra charge for members

(Gold's Gym)... might be an option if the home workouts get stale.

WELCOME TAMMY!

I love this group. Hope you find it as supportive as I do.

I have a goal of 18% BF too. I started Jan 13th, but haven't weighed

or fat-tested myself since I started - I think I will at the end of

this fourth week. I can't tell a whole lot of change... I have a

similar body to you I thihnk - I'm 5'8 " , 155#s, 25% BF.

I can see how if you've done this once the second time would be more

difficult, but I keep reading my goals out loud a couple times a week

and saying my " new patterns " aloud, " Instead of dragging myself out

of bed at the last possible minute, I now give myself time to work

out in the morning, " and so on....

Plus I posted my " before " pictures ALL over - I have one on my

fridge, which helps with the urge to " taste " when I cook for others.

Thanks for posting,

Jodie G.

Good to have you on the list. I hope your message didn't take over 4

years to get through! It was dated Jan 18, 1999.

I'd say you are lucky in a way to find exercise addictive. So many

people have problems staying motivated.

I hope to hear more from you in the future.

weight and toning up.

Hi , and welcome to the group! Have you read the Body-for-LIFE

book yet? Your message doesn't mention whether you have it or not.

If not, I highly recommend reading it... it's a great program and

yields awesome results. Feel free to jump in anytime with questions

or comments. :) We do discuss other fitness programs here, but

usually mark them " OT " for off-topic since this is mainly a BFL list.

A suggestion for the walking -- get an alarm system. It will alert

you she is getting up -- and the alarm may become a reminder to her

that she's not supposed to walk. My Dad had one in the hospital

when his pneumonia caused severe dilarium (sp). It really helped.

what a great idea. i find that i can't relax at all - day or night - since i

never know when she is going to be jumping up. where do you get these alarms,

does anyone know? that would be wonderful as mom can't remember she can't

walk.......sounds perfect. thanks too much!

Welcome Martha! Dr. K is the best and congratulations. Here's praying for an uneventful surgery and speedy recovery!

Hello,

I will be receiving a DS by Dr. Keshishian on August 29! I am so humbled and grateful. I am 5'8" and 300 Lbs. I have no co-morbidities....yet but several family members do. It is just a matter of time without having the surgery.

I will be a 1st time grandmother in October, and we have a 12 year old and 7 year old at home (3 kids total).

I know I'll need support from my fellow DS'rs. I'm glad to be able to come here and learn!

Move over on the losers bench.
