Hello All

My 4 yr old pdd-nos daughter has been a picky eater since birth. She

doesn't eat much meat or vegetables. She has a limited amount of food

that she does eat (pb & j, crackers, oatmeal, grilled

cheese, cheeseburgers and anything sweet). I have sent pb & j sandwiches

in her lunch to school everyday but lately she won't eat them. In the

past I would take her other foods that she would eat at home but she

wouldn't eat them at school so we just sent pb & j with different sides.

Is anyone aware of a book with recipes for our kids or any ideas on how

i can get her to eat other foods. The school wants me to send frozen

foods to feed her if she won't eat the pb & j but the problem is there

aren't frozen foods that I have come across that she will eat. It seem

like she checks out the food by touching or just looking at it and then

if it passes her test she will put it in her mouth and most of the time

she ends up sticking out her tongue and spitting the food on the ground.

Thanks

My boys are both extremely picky and I would suggest trying PB & honey as an

alternate or PB & Marshmallow Fluff.  Here are a few healthy snacks they will

eat:

grapes

raisins

raisin bread with cream cheese

american cheese & crackers

crackers with port wine cheese spread

bagel with cream cheese

cream cheese & jelly sandwich (try the raisin bread)

cereal bars (one of my boys eats the soft kind the other eats crunchy)

apple sauce (or another flavored berry sauce)

yogurt or gogurt (yobaby is the healthiest I believe)

In addition to offering many foods repeatedly, it is a good idea to seek a

feeding therapist.  There are medical conditions that will develop if a child

has a limited diet.  http://www.ptilubbock.com/ is a place in Lubbock TX.

,

Has she had an food testing done? It could be that she feels bad

eating some foods. IgG testing helped at our house. It sounds like

she is craving alot of wheat and dairy. Some of our kids crave the

foods that bother them most because they are not getting what they

need from the food they are eating.

Good luck!

Best Regards,

Sofia

Have you thought about trying a gluten free casein free diet? I know

this sounds more limiting, especially that what the list of food she

is eating is mainly gluten and casein, but my experience with my son

and many other kids who go on the diet shows that after they finish

going through the rough period of starting the diet, they expand

their food choices.

Here are a few tips:

Offer a new food in small quantities every day along with her

preferred foods.

Eat some of the same new food yourself infront of her and encourage

her to try it.

Don't make it a conflict situation, if she doesn't eat it, it's okay.

Keep offering the new food up at least 15 times, be persistant and

don't give up, but be relaxied about it.

Autism One 2007 had an excellent power point on line for nutrition

and Autism by Mathews it's definitely worth looking at:

I don't think your child is a picky eater. I hated when

folks used to say this about my son. He was an addict and had very

specific preferences for food. I did not believe this was

behavioral. I knew that something was causing this limited diet.

A couple of decades into eating processed foods we have obesity and

disease in just about every home. It's catching up with all of

us.

If you remove these foods that she is narrowing down to, you will

remove the food source to the gut bugs in her body. This will cause

die off. It was a difficult time in this house. HELL quite

frankly. But by taking these foods away and slowly getting good

whole foods in, including fermented foods we have changed my son's

eating habits. His body ecology has changed and he now receives

these new foods easily.

Today we started out with a raw green smoothie w/ proteins/fats,

young coconut kefir, raw carrots, unsweetened apple sauce with

supplements, quinoa sprouted bread topped with almond butter,

cultured beets, and now he sits beside me snacking on Cassava Sea

Mist chips.

This was a kid who would only eat certain foods all having gluten,

sugar, and casein in them. He would only eat crackers, grilled

cheese, pizza, you get the idea... He wasn't picky, he was an

addict. We used Spectrum of Hope to help us implement these habits

as part of his ABA program. So in this house it took a behavioral

approach and changing what was going into his body. We've been at

this three years and he is well on his way to a full recovery of

autism.

We all eat this way, and I've never been better mentally. What

worked in this house, was we took anything he ate all the time

away. Anything he had to have/crave was taken away. Likely

allergy or feeding gut bugs.

Thankfully nobody has yet taken my coffee away that I DON'T want to

part with...but at some point I may have to give this a break too.

We really need to look at foods kids are eating everyday.
