Hi! My name is Donna, and I have three children. My 10 year old daughter has

OCD. It has put a tremendous strain on my marriage and family. My daughter

is often prone to extreme rages. We've had holes kicked in the walls, etc.

She is currently on 30 mg. of Prozac. She is an insomniac at night, and

often falls asleep at school during the day.

We recently pulled her out of public school, and placed her in a private

school, where she is just one of five students in her class. That seems to

have helped a little, however her principal and teacher are unfamiliar with

OCD, and they are unsure how to help ease the situation. Any suggestions? I

often feel so alone, and I would just like to know if anyone else is going

through similar circumstances.

Donna

Donna-do you think there could be more going on than OCD. My Eileen is BP

also and has many rages! She is Celexa for OCD and Geodon for aggressive

behavior and we'll be adding Topamax as the mood stabilizer. She could be

raging because if he suffers from BP also, antidepressants along cause the BP

to get worse. You could take the BP questionaire at The Bipolar Child Parent

Questionnaire-Version 1.2 Then click on Survey REquest and then

questionaire. I know-it makes family life extremely difficult! Also, I read

OCD-new help for the family. But basically, you need a combination of

meds/therapy. Good luck-ellen

Hi Donna,

All my feelings with you with what you are passing through with daughter. We

all on this list have as I'm sure millions around the world are passing to

similar situations with one or two of their children. When my son started

this disorder, it was very severe at the beginning & for several years. The

first thing we did, we shifted him to another school. We had a report from

his psychiastrist about his conditions. I gave it to the principal of the

school, he was very helpfull. He in his turn talked with the general manager

of the school & with the teachers that are to teach Amer. There was

cooperation among them all, that thing for sure helped Amer a lot. As you

mentioned he use to have

insomia at night & feels sleepy at the class & sleeps. Some times he use not

to tolorate sitting & listening to teacher explanation at class dor long

time, he use to go out of class for a while then enters again. The main

issue is that there was a well understanding to Amer's situation & they were

dealing with him accordingly. So I think if you do the same it will help

your daughter.

Good luck

Yes, I do believe my daughter could have BP as well. The psychiatrist has

that in her charts as a rule out. They however, do not want to give her that

label until she is a little older. Thanks for the info.

Hi everyone,

It's been awhile since I've been on the site. I wanted to give an

update on how is doing. She is doing great its been two years

since she's been in a cast Her curve is still low it's about a 14

degree. For everyone that does not know She was Dr.

first early treatment casting I gave him Miss Methas video to watch

and he said he would try it on her and she has done great ever since

She was 28 months old for her first cast at an S curve of 66 degrees

and 55 degees she were her cast for 2 years when she came out of

cast she was about a 10-12 degree. Then a year later she went to a

20 degree then back down to 14 degrees and has been doing great. She

did not go into bracing after casting and thats probly why she went

up to 20 degrees then they put her into a night brace and she were

that for about a year. is now 6 years old and very tall for

her age shes in the 95% for her hieght. We go back to the Shriners

in Erie on March 12th. I hope eveyone is doing good and and I

send hugs to all the little ones.

Good Luck to all,

Bridgette and from Ohio

--Hi,

she was'nt put into any brace after her casting and she was about a

13 degrees at that time.About a year later she went to 20 degrees

and thats when they put her into a night brace and then she went

back down to 14 degrees. she her night brace is too small now and

she has'nt woren it for about 8 months and in Oct.2007 she was still

at 14 degrees. We go back in March to see how she is doing and if

she needs another night brace. Sorry if I said it wrong in my last

post.I do think the night Brace helps.

Good luck,

Bridgette

The cookies are some sort of comfort food probably and she's very likely stuffing down her feelings of disgust by "comforting" herself with food. It is a very vicious cycle that makes no logical sense yet is very real for sooooooo many people (including me, I have to fight it all the time). You get out of the cycle by recognizing it and finding alternate behaviors that especially address what it is you truly need and substituting those behaviors for eating (or at least eating healthier foods if the only thing that will work is to crunch something or chew or whatever sensory need you might also have). It is difficult to change because it especially involves really looking at why we do the things we do and what we are not getting that we need (or think we do anyway). It requires a willingness to face sometimes very difficult situations and deal with them more effectively. Very tough stuff for many of us. (And this doesn't btw, actually address the people Kassia is referring to, those are people that are not really serious about wanting to make any changes and take care of themselves -- sometimes these are the same people that I'm talking about, sometimes they just haven't been hit with any real sense of need to make changes so they yap but don't do anything.)

your resident Weight Watchers leader (for those who wonder where I'm getting this stuff!)

That's EXACTLY how my DD is. She talks, but nothing happens and if it does, its VERY short lived.

She told me just a couple days ago that she is disgusted by the way she looks, yet she's stuffing her mouth with cookies? LOL I don't get it.... I know it's hard, but I've always been told that if you keep saying its hard then it will keep being hard.

My favorite comment that I hear at the gym all too often is "What's that skinny girl doing at the gym?" I'm rude though and reply. LOL "How do you think she got skinny?" "How do you think she stays skinny?" and "Just because someone looks fit doesn't mean they are. You can have beautiful 6 pack abs and die of a heart attack if you don't take care of it." People usually shut up then.

I'm really quick to say, I wasn't born this way, I've worked really hard to get here and I work really hard to stay here too! I love hearing people say, "How did YOU get hooked up with Weight Watchers?" because it gives me a chance to tell them they too can have people make obnoxious comments to them! ;-)
