Tracey,I replied to your post below but maybe you didn't see it as it got set up as another thread I think!  I would really like to hear a response to this and especially the source of your information as my son has been on melatonin continuously for 4 years.

I wrote: Melatonin can cause waking if the dose it too high - the dose should always be the lowest effective dose - the body naturally produces an antidote to melatonin midway through the sleep cycle, if you have too much melatonin, this can trigger a higher release of the waking hormone (the body's natural antidote) and cause early arousal.

Where are the studies showing that melatonin slows breathing?  If this were the case then there would be a known LD50 and there is no known LD50 - if melatonin caused ANY respiratory changes then they would be the cause of death in a LD50 trial.  While I acknowledge that LD50 measures acute rather than chronic toxicity, if melatonin had affected respiratory rates then doses of 6,000mgs PER DAY on human test subjects would have surely caused notable respiratory problems or death.  As it was, 6,000mgs a day caused NO symptoms in many subjects and those that did have symptoms noted stomach upset (which is understandable, 6,000mgs is a hell of a lot of melatonin, my son takes 4mgs a night!) and sleeplessness.

Hi is

The thing I have seen in practice work in a matter of days is L'Ornithine.. taken an hour before bed..

Melatonin slows down breathing rate.. so it there is an underlying breathing problem person may go to sleep quickly after  taking in only to  end up waking up suddenly from sleep to get more oxygen to brain.- drifting off again and then waking up..

Also L'ornithine helps to convert nitrogen into urea.. and nitrogen build up in the brain has I think been implicated with seizure.

Best Wishes
