Guest guest
Kim asked Tom: " How was your trip? Take any photos? " Tom commented on our trip to Mammoth Cave. What he did NOT comment on was the tour through Mammoth Cave itself. The guide was a wonderful retired drill sargeant who conducted the tour with many of the mannerisms you would expect of a military man. His commentaries were succinct and filled with historical facts and imagination. At one point, the guide told of how -- during the War of 1812 -- the Americans soundly defeated the British in Canada and this was in part due to the fact that munitions were hidden in Mammoth Cave. He then asked the group if there were any questions. Cub's voice rang through the cave. " I have a question, sir, " he called out in a polite voice. " Yes? " the drill sargeant asked, unaware that Cub can sometimes say the most 'interesting' factual things that may not be supportive of another person's point of view. " Canadians burned the White House down to the ground in the War of 1812, " Cub commented factually. A few people on the tour were appalled that a child would make such a claim. A few people on the tour chuckled at the historical fact that the White House had indeed been burned to the ground in the War of 1812. " I am not discussing politics with you, young man, " the drill sargeant countered and that was the end of the discussion. But the tour continued. Mammoth Cave was truly a magnificent sight.
