From other comments I've heard on the board & what our doctor has told us over the past several months, I truly believe it is hugely important to go SLOWLY on the increases. My daughter waited a full month in between each increase & each one was only 10mg at a time. In fact, I believe a couple of the appts were actually a little longer than 4 weeks apart. Keep this in mind. Rushing the increases won't help & might actually cause problems. Good luck! LT
Guest guest
Adele, I'm going through this now as we speak also. My son(4) was on prozac, and was off the wall. We than put him on zoloft. Again, off the wall. My p-doc now says that unfortunately we have to put him on an antipsychotic, because the SSRI's are not working. Although they diminish his bad thoughts, his behavior is totally unaceptable, and he wasn't like this before the meds. This is the last thing I wanted to do, but have exhausted all other options due to his age..From what I have experienced with both of my kids that are on meds, once they become hyper from the SSRI's , it doesn't go away until after the drug is stopped. hope this helps some hugs Judy adelem1232000 <adelem@...> wrote: Question, for those of you whose child is responding well with a SSRI, do they go through the side affects at the beginning? Does the med make them overly hyper at the beginning? We have just started Celexa after trying Zoloft which ended up causing very bad side affects. The first day my son is on Celexa he is already bouncing off the walls. Is this a sign that this one isn't going to work either? I am determined not to let this one go so long with such negative reactions. Or is the hyperness sometimes something you have to go through for a week or two until the body gets use to it. Guest guest
What dosage is he on? If he's not putting himself/others in danger, is able to function during the day, at school, etc., you might try to wait it out a couple weeks, give his body time to adjust. Because this could just be initial effects and things calm down. One thing I've heard nurses/doctors complain about is parents quitting the meds the end of the first week due to either hyperness or sleepiness and not giving kids/body time to adjust. took Celexa and at first had trouble going to sleep. He's normally a low-energy person anyway, and I didn't notice any hyperness at all but it did seem to keep him awake at first but that stopped. Actually it was sort of sedating after that as he began to feel tired during the day (he took his dose at bedtime) and started taking a nap each day after school! Quick thoughts! > > Question, for those of you whose child is responding well with a SSRI, > do they go through the side affects at the beginning? Guest guest
Hi Adele, SSRIs provide the best relief for OCD symptems, so I agree with Chris that it's worth waiting it out as long as your son is able to function in school and his behavior isn't dangerous to himself or others. My son's experience was as bad as it was only because the p-doc mistook his reaction for the drug's typical activating effects. He wanted to continue increasing the dose because he attributed 's inability to function to icreased anxiety. If on the SSRI your son's OCD becomes much, much worse and he can't function, that's when you need to rely on your gut feeling as to whether he should stick it out. Guest guest
My daughter was initially on a very low dose of Zoloft. While on it, her symptoms got very much worse. We cannot be sure whether that was the result of the Zoloft, or whether the dose was just too low to be having any effect at all and she just " naturally " got worse. At any rate, she was switched to Prozac and we saw almost immediate improvement with no or only mild side effects. She has some sleepiness which may or may not be related to the meds. Hope this helps. P. jtlt@... wrote: In a message dated 9/14/2006 7:41:45 A.M.
