Guest guest
Hi Carolyn, I also watched the show last night. I really enjoy the show. I too was wondering how both parents could afford not work, but still had money. The idea that he had never been to a doctor seemed ridiculous. Of course, all of us with kids under the autism umbrella had to have gone to a doctor for something. I wish the child hadn't had something so outrageous, bothered me. Why couldn't it have been something more mainstream? I always thought that Dr. House had Asperger's Syndrome and it was never mentioned until last night. He is so bright, yet lacks social skills. The fact that he and the child communicated as if they shared a bond touched me. When Dr. House was obsessing about the carpet, it reminded me of my own son. I hope they continue this type of storyline on Dr. House. It could educate a number of people. Sherri -------------- Original message -------------- From: "Carolyn" <charper777@...> Hi everybody, I was wondering if any of you watched "Dr. House" last night on t.v. They had a patient about ten years old who was severely autistic and depicted his parents as rather obsessive people who had designed their lives and schedules entirely around there son, had both quit their jobs to care for him, but I had trouble understanding how they did that and still had money. Anyway they had never taken him to a doctor until he got sick, I guess for the first time. And of course he had something really weird and far out, worms in his body from eating the sand in the sand box that raccoons had poo pooed in, and they had traveled all over his body causing all sorts of trouble. But of course Dr. House figured it out, he always does, and the child had evidentially his first eye contact and real communication with anybody, and walked up to Dr. House as they were leaving, and gave him his hand held game thingy he so treasured. It was a little annoying to me how they portrayed the parents as being such nut cases, and the little boy had a lot of tantrums like when they stuck him into the cat scan machine. Seems the moral of the story was that he learned to trust Dr. House because he was not afraid of him, and would talk directly to him, and kid around, etc., just treated him like a regular kid pretty much. Oh yes, and they portrayed Dr. House as perhaps high functioning autistic himself because of all his strange obsessive behaviors, but only told that to the hospital administrator because he wanted his old carpet back in his office...... Does anybody else watch "Dr. House?" It kind of grows on you....like a weed. Carolyn in Oregon
Guest guest
I have been watching since the beginning. Babies and Bathwater (season 1) was/is my favorite episode, because my DD has Di Syndrome. I think suggested to Cuddy that House was Autistic just to get one of them to give on the carpet issue. If you noticed used the broadest definition of Autism too. With the definition given I am autistic. lol I hate change almost to obsession(I am picky about how things are most of the time), and rarely make friends (with 4 kids under 4 I have no time for me let alone friends) and I avoid eye contact. The eye contact problem is having a lazy eye and astigmatism in the same eye. I get a head when others have 5 or 6 eyes. Also grosses people out when my right eye "travels without the left moving" KelsyMama To Caitlyn Oct '02 (22Q11.2 Deletion)CJ Sept '03 (Autism)Edan May '06Hunter May '06 ----- Original Message ----- From: Carolyn Does anybody else watch "Dr. House?" Guest guest
Hello, Yes I watch Dr. House all the time it is one of my favorite shows. I also wondered how the family was surviving not working ( maybe had a home business or inheritence ?) the father seemed to me more of the person that wanted the boy to keep to the schedule than the mom. The worm thing I have seen that before on discover health Channel a few months ago and oddly enough it was in someones eye then too and the person found out about it because he was looking in the mirror and seen something moving around in the whites of his eye. He had been taken to dr's because House said all the Dr's could not figure out why he was screaming besides his Dx's, but the parents knew something just was not right with there son. My son too have a lot of tantrums to when it comes to dr's or disturbing his game time and he is verbal. Mainly he likes to argue with his dr's and give them a hard time and make them prove that they at least have a clue at what there doing ( my son has a medical science obsessions thanks to discovery channel's ) and don't let them be late cause he will tell them I was here on time and you should have been to. Dentist are just screaming tantrums even before they even touch him. The boy probably had more tantrums than normaly he would because he might have been scared or in pain from those pesty worms. I like House I wish my kid had Dr's like House straight and to the point. Guest guest
YES YES YES! We are hooked on House. Just picked up the entire 2nd season at the public library today. I'm embarassed to say that I fell asleep during the last episode with the autistic boy. I'm terrible about falling asleep during movies and such. But I love House, and I still fell asleep. ;-)

The bunch of them seem to watch HOUSE too. I never heard of it. I guess that Dr House has Aspergers? I heard that it is on the FOX channel on TUESDAY nights? I hope to catch it very soon. in IL

Guest guest
Yes, he does have that effect at first, that is for sure, don't know why we just kept watching him anyway, and now he doesn't even bother us, guess because the other people balance him out nicely, and the story lines are usually quite interesting, and we are waiting for that " Mason," moment when he goes AHA! and solves the case. Carolyn Re: Dr. House anybody? Guest guest
Oh yah, symbolic rather than literal, yes that is the truth we do all change so dramatically like these parents did with these kind of behaviors to learn to live with in an autistic child, never thought about symbolism, and hay I took those college lit classes too. They was being creative, what do you think was symbolic about the worms in his body? Maybe just more far outedness there, as our minds always jump to the weirdest conclusion after awhile, because everything seems rather weird, and simply not real. Carolyn Re: Dr. House anybody? I saw it as well written - more symbolic than finger-pointing. Don't these children take over our lives? Don't we do things - diet, environment, more worry than "normal" - that we wouldn't "normally" have done? My son has completely changed our lives. My experience with ihm has changed me. Those parents weren't the same people as they were when they were younger, before their son. I read a lot into it, eh? Sharon
Guest guest
Where is that, the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, is that a program run here in Eugene, Oregon? Trying to think of the guy who started it, my son used to go to his classes. It will come to me.... Anyway you are right about the professionals treating parents like they are idiots while the puff their own selves up, thinking they have all the answers, but in our case here with my son and I they did not have anything, no answers, pretty much nothing at all. I don't know why really, but it is true. Carolyn Re: Dr. House anybody? In a message dated 9/27/2006 2:10:19 P.M. Dear Carolyn, Isn't that the prevailing thought? That parents are idiots and the 'professionals' know everything (except how to get people well). The only people who don't think that way that I know of are at the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential. Francine
