Guest guest
I have just joined this group. I'm 51, male and in general good health. This is my experience with Simvastatin. Due to family health history I was prescribed Simvastatin (20mg) when I was 45. Having taken them for 6 years and had several blood tests, in February this year I asked my GP if they were working. He gave me another blood test and said that my cholesterol was about 5, should be lower and upped my dose to 40mg ( I think it was 6 when I started at age 45). I took the 40mg for 6 weeks and had a blood test which showed my cholesterol was now 4. However I had been suffering with insomnia. Then a strange thing happened. When I was 20 I had a depression about something I discovered had happened when I was 18. Sounds mad but I went back into the same depression I had at 20 exactly reliving the feelings and emotions and obsessive thoughts I had back then. I have also had trouble concentrating, cried a lot and had suicidal thoughts. I went back to the GP who simply dismissed it as a " reaction " to the tablets. He suggested I change to atorvastatin 10mg. I collected the prespription but haven't taken any tablets - just can't face it. I did some researh and found out that Simvastatin can reduce serotonin so self prescribed 5HTP - which did work but gave me side effects such as loss of libido and erectile dysfunction and anorgasmia, so stopped them as well. I've. I've now found out that too much 5HTP / serotonin can reduce dopamine and my symptons now match low dopamine so I tried mucuna pruriens - but it didn't have much effect. I've also started taking COQ10 on a daily basis. I also spent £300 on hypnotherapy - which helped slightly. Also tried self hypnosis MP3s which also helped slightly. 6 months on and still feeling down and getting the obsessive thoughts from 30 years ago I went back to my GP (a different one)He sent me for a blood test and I have now been diagnosed with Hypothyrodism. My thyroid was borderline before but I think the statins have aggravated the condition. I also have knee pain -the syptoms are the same as Patella Tendonitis - which can be caused by hypo para thyrodism - but so far my GP is refusing to give me a blood test for it. So in summary - was in perfect health until I took statins and been suffering since.
