You might say they are more employees than customers. There are three or four of them that live underneath the store. They help keep the mice and such away from the seed and animal feed. This picture was taken just after the store clerk put out some food for them and clearly they were more interested in food than having their pictures taken. The cats are fed once per day just to keep them in the area, in case there aren't many mice or whatever around.

The tom cat, a big orange and white fellow, is very skittish around people and won't come near anyone. One of the females is also shy, but not so bad that she won't come to food if you are putting it out. The second female is very friendly. She belonged to an elderly woman who died maybe two years ago now. Ever since, the cat has been living at the store and is inside as often as she can slip through the doors. All of them look in very good health. Some other cats also wander about, but I don't know where they are from, meaning if they are someone's pets of if they are just other strays that live around town.

I'm not sure if they are or not. I'll have to ask next time I speak to the folks down there. I know the friendly cat was supposed to have had a litter of kittens shortly before my last visit, but I never saw any. Also, they folks down there might not worry about that until they see more cats than there are now. As it stands there are only a few around town. If that number went up by say another 3 or 4 and those cats stayed around, they probably would catch them and have them fixed.

They are pretty good at controlling the pest population. Still, people do keep traps around just in case some of the critters do get in the house or store. The house I usually stay in isn't occupied enough to have food sources laying around for them though and I have never seen any sign of them being in there.

Some of the cats really like that house I stay in though. They will wander around it day and night, not hunting but more like passing through or relaxing on the porch. One of them was unnerving me one night though. It was the second night into my trip and I kept hearing something on the porch right outside the room I was watching TV in. Finally I got tired enough of it to go out the door with my pistol. Going down the steps and looking round the corner of the house, I didn't see anything. Back up on the porch, I had my back to the door and was looking over the back yard. Suddenly, there was a thump to my right at the end of the porch at the end of the house. I brought up the pistol but didn't cock or fire it because there stood a cat who seemed even more surprised than I was. I lowered the pistol and it stood there for another couple of seconds before continuing on its way. The noise I had been hearing was the cat jumping onto the air conditioning duct running from the unit just off the porch and into the house. I guess the porch was too high for it to reach directly so it had to hit the ductwork first. Anyway, the cat must have changed its route because I didn't hear it again for the rest remaining two weeks I was down there.

I just wanted to comment on the fact that I think it's great that we

are all adults here but can find such childlike pleasure in animal

pictures and not be ashamed.

I believe Aspies maintain a connectivity -however slight- to their

childhood and innocence, regardless of their experiences in the adult

world and it is that connectivity which keeps us grounded in reality,

morals, and values.

I've finally managed to put up three new cat pictures. I'll leave these

and the others up for a few more days before taking them down and

putting up some other squirrel pictures.

Yeah, way better than poison or traps. Too bad in many places people

have forgotten that cats are a natural pest control.

Love the pic's of the cats :-) some of them have that really 'catty'

look in their eyes (especially the one in the grass) - reminds me of

my female cat that can give looks that always makes me think 'if

looks could kill' :-)
