I got Hope's final dx yesterday. She has been diagnosed as Autistic. Initially the thought was that it was Aspergers because she is high average to gifted in intelligence, however, when all the test results were looked at it is definitely autism. My oldest daughter has AS and Sara may have a mood disorder, we start her on Depakote along with her super high adderall dosage (she has the attention span of a gnat). Hubby is going out to sea for the summer, but regional center is looking like they will pick up Hope's case and possibly Molly's too - so respite care may be a possibility (which is good because I am still trying to work both jobs and take care of the family and our little zoo!). PLEASE keep us in your prayers - especially the shell shocked mom...

Hi ,

Just a couple of things about the Depakote

you might not be aware of…

It can make you gain weight – this happened to both my daughter and

myself. My daughter has been off the med for 3- 4 yrs but hasn’t managed

to drop the extra weight.

Your hair can become sparse, then grow

back curlier.

If you take it during pregnancy there is a

risk of causing fetal valproate syndrome. This in turn seems to be a factor in

causing autism, though they haven’t quite drawn the direct comparison

between the two.

Better to have the knowledge than to wish

for it later.

My son Marty has taken Depakote for over 20 years now, I think they must have started him on it when it first came out. Anyway at first he got bulimia/anorexia, he would eat and eat and eat, or else he would refuse to eat at all, and you could not force food into him, and he got very skinny..

After awhile things kind of settled down, and he finally begin to eat normally, took awhile though. It was prescribed to control his seizures, but didn't seem to make a dent in them for a very long time, he still had clusters of about 4 or 5 grand mal, then go a week and have another cluster.

But now he doesn't do that anymore, praise God, only about a seizure or two a month, not very many. And he is on a food tube now, had to go on it probably about 5 years ago, trying to remember. It was because he had so many seizures and kind of lost the ability to swallow food very well, was always choking.

So he got really sick, almost died, had an infection in his throat, his epiglottis, it swelled up and he had to be on a ventilator for about a week, and intravenous Vancamyacin. So when he came out of that he for sure could not eat, so they put in the food tube.

But here is the Good News, he gained a bunch of weight after that and got stronger, and then the seizures went down!!! Yaeeeee!

Don't know if this makes any sense, just going over things here. Now I have learned my oldest son, Tom, is on Depokote too! His is for alcoholism, the damage he has done to his brain from drinking too much too long, to help his mood swings, temper, etc...hopefully he won't drink while on it, that is not good.

Oh yes, forgot to say he has bald spots on his head, I am wondering if it is from the Depokote. I thought he was maybe going bald on top, but when he had his hair cut not long ago, the lady said no, the hair was still there and growing, but had fallen out. Hmmm.

My oldest daughter and I were both on Depakote, I gained around 15 pounds, the big offender for weight gain for my daughter was risperdal - not so much the depakote. It is probably one of the safer mood stabilizers for kids thankfully. I didn't take depakote after I found out I was pregnant, I really hope that isn't what caused Hope to be autistic :( M Hunter <nancyhunter@...> wrote: Hi , Just a couple of things about the Depakote you might not be aware of… It can make you gain weight – this happened to both my daughter and myself. Just another comment on top of that, I hope you dont mind...I to was put on depakote for my bipolar and it made me gain over 40 pounds when, trust me, I needed no more extra. It also caused me to swell real bad in my feet, ankles, hands and fingers. A friend of mine has a son that was 11 put on it as well and he gained alot to. Neither one of us being able to take it off....Just wanted to share my insight on the med...I have taken so many with not much help but with alot of side effects and I just want to make others aware. From other people I have talked to, Depokote can cause

some hair loss.
