Guest guest
Crystal, I am the parent of a 22 year old with Asperger's. We have been through some of the same things you described. My son is also diagnosed with severe bi-polar disorder. Puberty is tough on children with Asperger's. I read somewhere that if not properly treated they can go into psychosis. Our life was a living nightmare of hospitalizations and violence until we got all the right diagnosis and supports. Has Bi-polar been ruled out as a diagnosis for your son? Feel free to email me off the list, I am happy to share whatever I can from our experiences and my resources if it will help. As I am learning everyday from my son, he has started doing things he never used too. he is now cutting himslf, because " i like the feeling " . I am a little nervouse on that end of things. Is that common? We moved to SD 6 years ago, and up until that point, the doctors AND psych. would just say he was acting out or it was myself and my husband. (this in WI). When we moved here, he was increasingly aggressive toward me mostly and some other kids. Around Christmas, he wanted to look at the lights around town. we did that for about an hour and we started back home. he started spitting on me and kicking the dash until it cracked. He then kept telling me how he was going to kill me in my sleep. after that, he said he was going to kill himself. He was 6 years old. The next day, I found my husband's pocket knife next to the passenger door floor. We asked for some advice and were told to have Tyler taken to a Hospital for a psych evaluation. He was diagnosed with Asperger's. He has been kicked out of the only 3 school in the area and we have had to place him in, now 3 private institutions. It's like he goes through cycles. Every 6 months he just breaks down. Anyway, I could go on forever. he is my research for my thesis, so it is very emotional. But I was wondering about the cutting and also he is 'cheeking' his medication. Crystal
