Just sharing my own experience. We tried about 30 med combinations -

most with either no effect or disastrous side effects. Now on Luvox

(antidepressant for OCD use) and small dose of Resperdal

(antipsychotic). Resperdal and seroquel and very similar, new

generation antipsychotics that do not have the severe side effects of

the older generation of drugs. Small doses added to antidepressants

more common now and with some good effects. My daughter is a success

story on these drugs and intensive therapy (CBT, ERP). in CA -

I'm still behind in my email from Easter break -- sorry about the late

response to your question but, what's your son's dosage of Prozac & how long

has

he been on it?

My son did extremely well on Prozac in terms of depression, but when trying

to increase the dose to target the OCD, all hell broke loose. He had a

horrible, horrible aggressive episode that involved puttign his fist through a

wall. This was so totally out of character for him. He then switched to

Zoloft. This too has worked wonders with depression and definitely decreased

anxiety. Abilify was added at one point, but that caused him to have a 45 pound

weight gain in an extremely short period of time. Since he has eating, body

dysmorphic issues, that obviously had to be stopped real quick. The weight

came off almost instantaneously. With the Abilify, he craved nothing but carbs

and couldn't seem to get enough. He was never a big eater prior to that.

Then, weaned off the Abilify and added Luvox to the Zoloft. Got up to 100 mg

of the Luvox, but had extreme fatigue and malaise. Tried to ride it out, but

nothing changed. He's currently being weaned down on the Luvox and still on

the Zoloft with gradual increasing of that. We see a definite decrease in

anxiety with the Zoloft/Luvox combo. Unfortunately, the stickler O's are what

we can't get at. He still will only eat with paper products (plates,

utensils, etc). For now, I think it's a matter of what's tolerable for him

lifestyle wise.

That's our experience so far with meds.

Can I ask what his dosage of Prozac was when he became so aggressive?

We were trying to go from 60 to 80 mg. As I'm sure you probably realize,

the dosages are higher for OCD treatment. He would have had to go even higher

to touch the OCD and obviously it wasn't going to happen. The aggression

occurred almost immediatley (within a few days of increasing the dose). It was

pretty scary.

We're still somewhat ignorant on a lot of this stuff. My daughter is

currently on 40mg/day of Prozac. Each time we go to the psychiatrist, she says

we

should up it 10mg because we're not seeing the full benefit of the drug yet &

it's best to increase it slowly. I'm just getting nervous about reaching

the higher doses. I'm scared to death that she'll start some physical tick or

start gaining weight, etc.

It just seems so unfair that the very drug that SHOULD be helping them can

actually cause more problems!

Thanks for the info.

This is good to know. We also have been VERY pleased (so far) with the

results of the Prozac. It's definitely made things easier for her, overall.

My now-11yo dd was diagnosed with an almost purely " reassurance " form of OCD

right around her 9th birthday. She was first given a low dose of Zoloft, which

just made things much worse and very weird (she was virtually non-functional for

the few weeks she was on it). She was switched to Prozac and we saw tremendous

improvement in about a week. She has now been on Prozac for almost two years,

gradually increasing to 60 mg. Although we definitely still see some OCD

indecision/need for reassurance, she is able to function. Right now we may be

seeing some waxing of symptoms, though.

my son does the same thing. When he is on low dosages it helps his

anxiety but when you increase it to help OCD it gets worse and this behavior is

worse.

Hi-Just a quick note-my daughter was on 80mg prozac

with pretty good results. It helped the ocd and

depression for awhile, but then her bi-polar led to

meds being changed. Best-sue12771
