Guest guest
Hi to all, I need some help. Yesterday morning I went jogging for a mile and today my calves are very sore. I decided to not do tae bo today because I don't want to over do it. I feel like not doing anything today was the right thing to do but I feel so guilty. I feel like I'm cheating. I thought maybe I would do a little more weight training (upper body) although I did that yesterday too, after jogging, My muscles aren't sore... Any suggestions? Barb who besides the getting new 4 pack in the mail, borrowed a bunch of exercise tapes from the local library to try

But if you overdo it, you will hurt yourself. I have been running everyday and trying to fit Tae Bo in there. Just keep listening to your body, and remember that it needs time to heal after running!!!

If you want a good stretching tape, I love " Stretching " by Bob available from collage video (www:/collagevideo.com) or in book form under the same name (should be in the library). I'm not sure which stretches are good for calves, except for one: bend forward with your knees bent; grab your ankles (or as far down as you can go) from behind and slowly try to straighten your legs. You could probably try do the instructional tape and just skip any moves that hurt your calves (except for stretching). Getting hurt can be a good excuse to revisit the instructional tape for the reminders and a slower, easier workout. I was never able to keep up running, with or without taebo, because of shin splints. With proper stretching before and after running and good running shoes, your calves should be OK with running. Skip the weights today! You won't lose any forward progress by missing a day. I know how hard it is, though. Hang in there. Elena

Ang, One of the hardest, but most important lessons I've learned was to not feel guilty for missing a day of working out. I was one of those people who HAD to run the same amount that I had run the previous day (or more) or I felt like I hadn't worked out. I didn't listen to my body at all and if I could only do a 30 minute workout, I'd think " why bother " . It was a horrible way of thinking and I am lucky I didn't end up hurting myself. The best thing you can do is listen to your body. If your calves are sore and your body is tired, it may be in your best interest to skip a day and just do some stretching. It all depends on how bad the soreness is. Sometimes it helps to work through it and other times it's best to take it easy. You have to figure out how to push yourself without killing yourself...that's the tricky part. If you really aren't feeling up to working out...do something simple, like stretching or the instructional tape (minus the parts that will make your legs feel worse). And if you end up missing a day....don't feel guilty about it. You are just starting out and it will take your muscles awhile to get used to this extra exercise. Once you start doing it and your muscles get used to it, you can start doing it every day without worry. Just listen to your body and try to remember that missing a day because you are sore does not mean you are " cheating " it just means that you are being smart so that you don't injure yourself and end up missing even more time. Take it slow in the beginning, especially with running....you'll notice the improvement, even if you have to miss a few days every now and then
