- We have never tried Cimetidine (my daughter hasn't been

diagnosed with , we don't know what she has, but it doesn't

really seem like ), but we have tried many other medications,

including Colchicine (the medication for FMF) and our rheumatologist

has always had us slowly wean off the medications. Even when we are

certain its not working and they are fairly benign medications,

we've never cut anything out cold turkey. From my understanding

Cimetidine is pretty benign, with little side effects, etc. so I

don't see why it wouldn't be ok for you guys to slowly decrease the

dosage instead of stopping abruptly. I would ask the doctor about

this. And that way, if her episodes are worse as you are weaning

off of it, then maybe its a sign that it is helping some? Hopefully

others who have used Cimetidine will chime in.

Good luck!

The trial time to see if Cimetidine works is 6 months. If it does not work

then you should stop the medication. If it works by then the recommendation

is another 6 months. Make sure liver enzymes are checked. If it is not

working you can stop the medication. It is NOT like Prednisone or other

drugs... does not have to be slowly stopped. However if it works.... slowly

remove the medication to allow her body to take over the immunilogical

effect and the fevers hopefully will not return.

We have a couple of children on the board who did get a positive response at

about 4 months... and they continued the medication for about a year...

weaned... (cut back to half the dose for a couple months then stopped) and

they remain fever free.

Hope this helps

God Bless

Hi,

Here is a crazy question....

We just started our 5 year old son on cimetidine this week. After a

couple of days of battling over the awful taste, we found he was

willing to take it with a big orange juice chaser. I haven't seen

anywhere that absorption is diminished if taken with certain things

(acidic food, citris, vitamin C or calcium) but I'm wondering if anyone

knows anything about this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Nothing found in the drug pamphlet for Cimetidine... Call the pharmacy to make

sure.

Good Luck

Thanks for your input! Our doctor still wants us to give it a couple more

weeks. For your questions, I was wondering the same thing about the doses. Our

nurse is suppose to call me back this morning, and I will ask her that

question. We have a HORRIBLE time getting him to take his medicine. He screams

and we have to basically hold him down. Now he has gotten real good at spitting

it out so we never know how much he actually gets each day. If you know any

tips, please let me know!

The pharmacist told us to add artificial sweetener to our daughter. I add a

couple packets to each small bottle and she does not complain. Have you ever

tasted it-poor kids make no wonder they don't want to take it. Hope this

helps.

Kris (mom of on Cimetidine for 1 1/2 years.)
