Guest guest
>>> Does this seem to be common to delay fever episodes after some illness like a virus or a cold or something? I'm just wondering if I can kind of know what to expect if this does happen to a lot of the children. We are going on vacation next week, a vacation I planned around his fevers. >>> This is not typical of in any way. Having cold symptoms at the same time does sometimes occur but it is usually a mild symptom. Kids with are usually described as RARELY having any other illness! Guest guest
My daughter Ella, who is 2, has had 2 ear infections since she started getting her fevers nearly a year and a half ago. With one of the ear infections, it seemed to delay the following fever she was due for (I can't remember how late the fever was, but probably 2 weeks or a little more). After her last ear infection she had at the end of February, the following fever came sooner than we had expected. Normally she fevers about every 5-6 weeks, but after her last ear infection the fever came after only 28 days. I don't know that ear infections actually caused her fevers to change, but it does seem to be a possible common link. In both cases, the fevers returned to their normal pattern afterwards. As much as I hate the fevers, I like that they are relatively predictable. Ella has not had a fever in over 6 weeks now, so it's a bit over due at this point. We have plans out of town tonight and we are planning to be out of town for the weekend as well, so I keep thinking that it's going to appear at an inopportune time (I guess there never is a good time). Thankfully prednisone has worked really well for Ella, so it's kind of our insurance policy. At this point we'll be carrying the prednisone with us wherever we go, but I'd hate for the fever to come when we're not home.
Guest guest
Fran, I am glad you said that because (knock on wood) Evan rarely gets anything else but his fever episodes. No colds, no strep, no viruses. He did have ear infections when he was a baby, but tubes fixed that problem. He also has seasonal allergies for which he was recently put on Nasonex and takes claritin occasionally when symptoms are real bad. Otherwise he cycles every 4-7 weeks with symptoms only. We are going to see Dr Feder on May 9th. Maybe we can get some more answers as to why his fevers have come back so strong after a three year " remission " . Guest guest
I can agree with that... My son is 9 years old and he has not had a cold or anything else since he was about 2 years old. Guest guest
Hi, I think some people got your question wrong. Yes, kids are usually very healthy and hardly get viruses but when they do get a virus or a " real " infection, we and others on this site have experienced delays in the cycle. We just went almost 9 weeks without a fever. Usually it has been coming once a month. Right when our daughter was about due for her fever, she got a really big fat cold, something she has not had in a while. Due to that she skipped a whole cycle it seems, but from what we experienced and what I read on this site it is hard to predict if a whole cycle is skipped or if the fever is just delayed a bit. Good luck on your trip, I hope the fever is delayed long enough so you can all enjoy it. , mom to Hannah, , 2yrs old > > Maybe I'm looking for answers that aren't there, but my 3 year old > (possibly ) has been very regular with his episodes for quite a > while now. Guest guest
I agree with you and our experience has been similar. My daughter rarely gets sick. My older two children seem to trade viruses and other infections all winter long, but Ella never gets sick when they do. This is the same with daycare. All of the other kids get sick, except Ella. Having said that, she has had two " real " illnesses, both ear infections, over the last 18 months. With one she ran a low grade fever and with the other she did not. When she had an ear infection in March, she started running a low grade fever about two weeks after one of her normal fevers. She was fine during the day, but the fever would creep up to about 100 or 100.5 in the evening. This went on for a couple of days and was very ATYPICAL of a normal fever episode for her and because the fever seemed atypical and low grade, we chose not to treat it with prednisone as we normally would do with a regular fever. After a couple days of this we brought her in and found out that she had an ear infection. We are fairly confident that this fever was the first fever that she's ever had that was associated with a " real " illness. Although Ella gets her fevers regularly, in many regards we see her as our healthiest child because she rarely gets sick with the common crud and so far we've been able to manage her fevers remarkably well with prednisone. > > Hi, I think some people got your question wrong. Guest guest
Thanks for the feedback. very, very rarely gets sick either, even when his sister is sick. I was saying that he has not been sick in so long that I can't even remember the last time he was sick with anything other than the fevers. That's why it's so strange that every four weeks he gets his fevers, like clockwork...until this cycle. The only difference is that he had a bad virus this time the week before his fever was due. Now he seems to have skipped this month's fever so far. It will be interesting to see what happens and when the get back on schedule. , you are so right...being able to plan and predict the episodes is such a Godsend. That's why it's so frustrating to lose the predictability. It's interesting that others' fevers have been thrown off some too. ...one of the many mysteries of this interesting condition.
