Guest guest
This was my response to Kendra's article about Autism Speaks. Hi Kendra: I agree that there should be autism non-profits that fund research-based autism treatments. I also agree that pharmaceutical companies are only interested in finding drugs to mask symptoms and keep these kids on drugs to increase their profits. They are not interested in cures. In my state, VA, most insurance companies and school districts do not fund Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and RDI (relationship development intervention) programs. Families in my area of Northern Virginia were disappointed that there were no funding sources to help with the excessive ABA and RDI therapy costs. We came up with a solution. We teamed with Kids Care Connections, www.walkforautism.org and created a Walk for Autism VA. Last year we raised over $26,000 to fund scholarships for families with ASD kids that do ABA and RDI therapies. It's not much, but it's a start. This year we have a website, www.walkforautismva.org and we will hold our second annual walk with the same intent. Thanks so much for writing your article!
