Who am I to make such a statement? I am the author of " Son-Rise, " one of the " bibles of hope " referred to by Cammie McGovern in " Autism's Parent Trap " (Op-Ed, June 5). I am also the co-founder, with my wife, Samahria, of the Autism Treatment Center of America. Ms. McGovern states, " To aim for full recovery — for the person your child might have been without autism — is to enter a dangerous emotional landscape. " When my son, who had an initial diagnosis of severe autism, graduated from Brown University (after we worked with him using the Son-Rise Program, which we created), it never occurred to me that I had been living in a " dangerous emotional landscape. " I know of many children who have recovered using the Son-Rise Program. I guess no one told their parents about the " dangerous emotional landscape " they had entered, either. At the Autism Treatment Center, we never decide in advance what a child can or cannot do. We give every child a chance without prejudice. And that has made all of the difference. Raun K. Kaufman, the first Son-Rise Program child, is now a lecturer, teacher and the chief executive of our center.
