Senator Schumer's comments came at Jowonio School which has aided in education of children with autism including Burke, who went on to graduate from Westhill High School and will soon begin studies at Syracuse University. While welcoming the federal help, advocates for children with autism say much more help is needed in the years to come. Dr. Biklen, Syracuse University School of Education, said, "The real leadership has come from families and has come from local communities that experience what it means to try to support someone with autism to attend a pre-school, to benefit from education, to go on to university as Burke is doing. The pressure will come from the communities and that will not go away." Biklen also says, compared to the needs, the amount of money spent on all types of disabilities is miniscule and that the government needs to target more money to aid in research and treatment.
