Guest guest
! Don't do diet pills! I was in weight watchers as well, and the problem is that the calories aren't high enough. Your metabolism keeps getting lower the less you eat. With intense workouts, you need to have enough fuel. Over the past 6 months, I have raised my metabolism 400 calories just by intense workouts and eating more calories 6 times a day. I can now eat 400-500 more calories a day and still weigh the same! I have a lot more muscle now too! The only tweak you might want to make to the program is sticking to only protein for your last meal. I say this just b/c you say that your thyroid is really low. That might help you Jen <jentheartist@...> wrote: Hi all! I don't know what is wrong with me...I am 38 and post menopausal (surgical)...I have to lose at least 40 lbs...I can not stand my gut anymore! My legs are not horrible,my arms are not bad, but my butt and belly are SCARY... I just came off of 12 weeks of WW and over that whole 12 weeks of not cheating and working out with it, I lost 2.6 lbs! I have been working out 5 days a week for 45-60 min... I haven't dropped a pound or an inch... what is wrong? I saw this book... I would like to try it...I need something to work! My doctor tested my thyroid, it's low but not low enough to treat... he said (nicely) that I have a " survivor cave woman metabolism " ...the more I diet the less it lets go... but if I just eat, it doesn't let it go either! *grin*... Please let me know if this book enlightened anyone else with the same or similar delima as me... I am SO desparate! I have even been tempted to try diet pills! I hate pills! Thanks for any advice! Gonna lose it in 06!!!
Guest guest
> I don't know what is wrong with me... Mindset ..there is noting 'wrong' with you! If you believe so, you become so. ;-) Positive thinking really does go along way! Also visualization helps too - cut out pictures to motivate you, paste positive sayings on your bathroom mirro for positive reinforcement and WRITE your goals down - why/what/how(theplan!) and read them daily! <I am 38 and postmenopausal (surgical)>> Are you on hormones? If so what? This is like a crink in the big picture - managable and certainly not as big of an obstacle as you may think or are letting it be. You can always go around an obstacle when you cant climb over it ;-) I'm sure there are others on this board that can speak about hormone replacement etc. better than I can. >I have to lose at least 40 lbs...I can not stand my gut > anymore! My legs are not horrible,my arms are not bad, > but my butt and belly are SCARY... Everyone has their starting point and their flaws(imagined or real LoL!) but the fact you can see some relatively 'good' bodyparts is a good thing to note and keep that in mind always. Again positive thinking. Be the best you can be. > I just came off of 12 weeks of WW and over that whole 12 weeks of > not cheating and working out with it, I lost 2.6 lbs! I have been > working out 5 days a week for 45-60 min...I haven't dropped a > pound or an inch... what is wrong? Nothings WRONG! Stop saying that! LoL! You dont say just what you were doing for exercise nor how many points you were eating or how they translate into caloric intake. I think many people fool themselves on WW (and many on BFL too) into thinking they arent eating all that much (I know I sure did)and it wasnt until I actually tracked some calories (manually at first and then with http://www.fitday.com) did it open my eyes to calorie *density* and real portion sizes. Great visual book called 'Picture Perfect Weightloss' compares foods, same calories but shows you the choices between them: http://tinyurl.com/bcht2 > I saw this book... I would like to try it...I need something to > work! My doctor tested my thyroid, it's low but not low enough to > treat... he said (nicely) that I have a " survivor cave woman > metabolism " ...the more I diet the less it lets go... but if I just > eat, it doesn't let it go either! *grin*... You really do create your own metabolism. There is the 'hampster metabolism' where women eat less & less but cardio more & more (like a hampster on a wheel!)to try to keep or lose more scale weight. What they dont realize is that they are wasting muscle away and thus destroying their metabolisms. They become 'skinny fat' with a high bodyfat percentage to lean ratio. Muscle tissue is active - it uses calories as fuel so you have to gain some muscle - stop scale watching - get you bodyfat tested and target THAT to go down and not necessarily just the scale-ho. Its evil dont touch it! ;-) Your body composition WILL change, you may just need to 'work it' a bit more than some others! Have a read thru the Hussmans website for a primer on how calories work, your metabolism and creating a CONSISTANT caloric deficit thru exercise and diet (meaning your daily food intake and not another d-i-e-t) this should be anew beginning for you as a way of life and not a BOdyFor12weeks - so here is a link to the Hussman website: http://www.hussmanfitness.org/ Also have a look/read thru the many links on to the left on this groups main page - there is a FAQ and lots of info in there too. Best of luck in reaching your goals - set small increments and it deosnt seem so overwhelming to get started - remember take small beginner steps/little positive changes and think of where you want to be by next year at this same time. You CAN do it, and we can be here to give you the support you may need along the way :-) Whew! Guess thats enough for now! joni -------------------------------------------- *Lift well, Eat less, Walk fast, Live long*
Guest guest
Thank you Joni! I have been working on the visualize thing... looking at pictures of me when I was the size I liked to be...it's easier for me to visualize when my face is on the picture *grin* Even if it was 10 or 15 years ago! I opted to not take hormones....my doctor asked me to take Premeran for 30 days after the surgery and I did try the bio-identical hormone creams for a short time, but those broke my face out something horrible...I think a hormone imbalance in me is too counter productive. I haven't had many side effects..occassional hot flashes (sweaty face yuck) but really nothing else. I recently moved and have a new family doctor and he suggested since I am not on any hormones that I try a low dose of an antidepressant to help my " brain wires " LOL... I have to admit, I didn't think I needed it, but I am taking 1/2 a pill and have noticed a difference in my anxiety levels (not that I went nuts or anything, but it's kept me from freaking out so bad at work) I use to freak out a little in private when things seemed overwhelming... they don't get to me too much anymore. But no hormones...I am needing to take calcium now to slow down Osteopiena...which I never thought I would have because I have a " thick " build anyhow and the Dr. said actually since I have the bones structure and a lot of muscle, he's not going to make me take Rx calcium, just over the counter...He said the working out will help slow that process. As for my body image...I have come to terms that my body isn't all of me, my personality and everything that goes with it makes up quite a bit, but I am scared because our family history (on my Mom's side...Dad is adopted so we have no clue) runs towards obesity and techincally I am considered obese...so I am worried and wanting to stop that cycle. I weigh 190 but no one can believe it (we carry the weight well distributed too *grin*) so at least I have that going for me...and I am muscular, so under my flab, there is a lot of toned strength...I just have to find it again. I actually did do the WW tracking and made sure I stayed in my points and rarely used my weekly points...24 points is a lot of food! A lot more than I am use to eating! The other thing that my doctor told me was to just eat when I was hungry...well, I can go most of the day without getting hungry...I know that's not good for me. But with WW, the leader said I had to eat the 24 and up to 4 of my workout points...so most of the time, after dinner, I would find myself with 5-7 points left and try to find ways to get those in...most of the time with healthy foods like an apple or something similar, but sometimes I would have a cup of hot chocolate (3 points) or 2 bags of the trick or treat size peanut M & M's (3 pts) because I love those! (Nut addict here) I forgot all about fitday.com...thanks! I will go there again! My work out looks like this: 20 min of cardio (tread mill or eliptical) then weight training for 20 min. Recently added 2 days a week of a workout video since it makes me feel like I am really working out more. I know I need to increase my weights (either the weight or the reps) because that portion of my workout has seemed too easy...but I am working out with a friend from work M-F from 5am - 6am and we have only missed a couple of workouts in the last month... that is WAY more than I have ever worked out in my life...I use to do 3 days a week...a few years ago, I joined a gym and did 3 days a week with the same workout plan and lost 30 lbs fairly quickly (3 months I think) and that's sort of what I was hoping for this time... but it's not doing it this time... I will keep working at it though because I know persistance pays... I was just curious if BFL had some secret insight into the aging process and why things are slower/different now. I will look at the Hussman site...never heard of that site before...thanks! Thanks for such a detailed response! I appreciate it!!!
Guest guest
> I am needing to take calcium now ...just over the counter > He said the working out will help slow that process. I think every woman should take a calcium supplement but take it as a combo with magnesium for better absorbtion: http://www.thezephyr.com/health/healthcf.htm > the doctor told me was to just eat when I was hungry... > well, I can go most of the day without getting hungry... > I know that's not good for me. Hmmm that says alot about how much your doctor knows about nutrition! You should be eating something small balanced and nutritious every two to three hours. You are fueling your body! Not just 'when you are hungry' - thats stupidity/shame on that doctor! > But with WW, the leader said I had to eat the 24 and up to 4 of my > workout points... 24 - 28 points is about 1050 to 1500 calories depending on your choices and fiber content. So you could be on the low end and that sets your body up for starvation mode where it hoards bodyfat for the next percieved famine coming (that never really does!) The human body is smart - you have to outwit it. You might find you are eating abit more on BFL, but thats ok its all about choices. > My work out looks like this: 20 min of cardio (tread mill or > eliptical) then weight training for 20 min. Do your cardio AFTER weights if you must do them on the same day - otherwise alternate days or do them different times of the day. You will get more benefit from both if you dont do cardio before weights. Remember the 20min of BFL cardio is HIIT style and not just the average stroll in the park that most people think of as cardio - make it intense. You may want to add some of that 'recreational cardio' at a different time of the day (for the heck of it)and that would be like 30-40 minutes additional to the basic BFL plan. joni __________________________________ *lalalala off to work I go ... Guest guest
Hi , Well, I had initially started BFL the end of NOV but did a few days then nothing so I OFFICIALLY re-started 1/1/06 and have been pretty consistent. I am over 40, 4 kids, and had a hysterectomy a year ago. My thyroid was tested and my doctor told me basically the same thing - no meds. I am 5'9 " and my weight 1/01/06 was 179.1 pounds, body fat tested at 35.6% (using calipers) and I was a tight size 12 pants. Sunday I took my measurements again (start of week 6). I weigh 179 pounds - lost only .1 pounds - BUT...my body fat measurement went down to 24.06%! I've lost inches and my size 12 pants are loose, especially in the waist. I have found that I try and train heavy on the weights, which has really helped. My weak area is cardio - I HATE CARDIO! However, I have found that my body craves it and I feel great when it is over. Weird. Anyway, hang in there!! in Atlanta :-) > > Hi all! > I don't know what is wrong with me...I am 38 and post menopausal > (surgical)...I have to lose at least 40 lbs...I can not stand my gut > anymore! Guest guest
Thanks ... I like weights better than cardio too but I think it's because it shows me just how out of shape I am! LOL... I can do 30 minutes of cardio, but it's not fun. I think I am going to start dancing more...that's cardio right? > > > > Hi all! > > I don't know what is wrong with me...I am 38 and post menopausal > > (surgical)...I have to lose at least 40 lbs...I can not stand my > gut > > anymore! Guest guest
Thanks Tara... I bought the book today and am going to get balanced... my problem with WW was too many points...I had a hard time eating that much! But I can do small meals and such throughout the day much better... if I don't have to " focus on how many points " something is, I should do better! Thanks again! Guest guest
Thank you Joni! I never realized that 24-28 points was that few of calories! I thought I was " pigging out " but you have a point...it was mostly veggies and WW dinners or Lean Cuisine... Thanks for the calcium tip too, I am taking one with magnesium and zinc. I was doing the cardio first to " warm me up " then the weights...but I bought the book today and my work out buddy and I have decided to follow the plan in the book alternating days and doing upper & lower body in between. (She's really motivational because she's like a size 4 or 6 and thinks she needs to lose weight! Ha! Boy do I have her beat! But I imagine myself getting to a size 8 or 10 and looking really good!) I can not get to my " recommended " weight because I look TERRIBLE...I had a time in my life (early 20's) when I couldn't afford groceries...so I was 120 lbs and I looked anorexic! I will be thrilled to get to 140-150. I am also going to add dancing back into my evenings...more likely at home for a little while after work! That's the joy of living alone, who cares right? ) Thanks again Joni!
