Hi - We've done both bracing and casting, but Siobhan was

older (just 3 yrs old) when she went into a brace, so I don't have

diapering tips I'm afraid!

Shriner's Hospital gave us a handful of undershirts that were a

perfect fit - very snug and very long. When Siobhan got her brace made

here (Vancouver, Canada) we had to search for a good undershirt, but

never found one that fit as well as the " special " Shriners ones.

Originally, our Ortho said that the brace was to come off an hour a

day, but thoughts seem to be changing on that one.... Dr D'Astous had

said that it could be worn for up to 16 hours a day. So, I'd check

when you get it, as opinions are differing on that.

As to preference - Siobhan always said that she preferred a cast,

cooler and more comfy!

Me - I missed the hugs, bathtime, swimming.... But, not the compliance

issues!

Good luck!

Hi ,

My son was about " 1 " when we finally started getting treatment for

him. He is now " 3 " and is in the cast. He had three TLSO braces all

of which he always managed to get himself out of from help of his

bigger sister, all of nine months. I personally preferred the one

piece t-shirt that snaps between the legs. I wouldn't recommend the

pull over t-shirts. Caan probably buy thenm anywhere. I always

bought them at Sears. or JC Penny's. An hour daily is what they

suggest. I always had to take the brace off for diaper changes

because of the snaps. I prefer the cast over the brace, especially

when ist comes to diapering. As far as being mobile, it really makes

no difference.

1. The ortho shop in Erie gave us one shirt. To buy an additional one -- it

cost us $49! It is a special shirt kind of like the one they put under the

casts.

2. It did keep riding up and had to be pulled up around the neck and

occasionally down around the hips.

3. I ended up buying extras at my local orthotic shop that had 2 arm flaps

that stayed between Jake and the brace. Therefore there was no rubbing/rawness

under the armpit. These were from the Boston Brace company and only cost me

$25/27 each. The quality was much better than the one from Erie, too. No more

riding.

4. Yes, Jake got one full hour out of brace every day. To be quite honest,

there were days it stayed off longer - not that I'm recommending that for you or

Cole. Just being candid.

5. Diapering was just another challenge to figure out like with the cast. We

ended up using pull-ups as Jake was near potty training age for us -- 21-22

months.

6. To be honest again, he did complain more with the brace as it is much

tighter than the cast. It was a small re-adjustment window of maybe 2 days.

7. There are pros and cons to each. The only reason I prefer the brace is

that he can bathe every day and his skin has a chance to breathe.

Cole will do great!

Hi !

Sol's in her brace & it's going great! Here's what I can answer since

having her home w/it for over almost 2 weeks..

1. They gave us some " body sock " type material that is just a roll of

tight knit material for me to cut piece by pice as I reapply her brace

after baths, & it's washable of course, however I don't know if I'll

be doing that of just buying a new role of material if I can find it.

2. It was hiking & bunching up under her brace when my husband got

back w/her & it actually causes some little pressure type soars from

the constant uneven fabric under there. Once I was able to bathe her &

reaplly fabric & brace my self I cut the strip just long enough to

fold over the top & bottom of her brace so that I could pull it

snuggly from both ends & tape it to each side so that all her

body/skin/ & underams feel is that soft & snug fabric.

3. I just found a sit yesterday that looks as thought they have what

I'm looking for, the website isn't coming up right now but it's

www.abledata.com, there are several merchants there w/different types

of orthotic " underwear " . That's the best place I've found this far &

plan on calling some of the company's today once their site is coming

up! :)

4. Dr. Sander's said she could have it off for bathing & that's it, we

had to have it off for a little while while her initial pressure soar

that was really bad healed & initally it looked extrememly straight

but then the slight curve became noticiable. Since then it's been on

except for bathing, but when it's off for the brief period it looks

expremely straight as if the brace is still effective even after it's

off for only a short period of time, I think more than an hour would

give the curve a chance to find itself again if their back isn't

strong & striaght enough. With Solana inparticular we are still aiming

to see correction w/this brace just like with the cast, utilizing her

growth to get her " out of brace " Cobb angle down further, so makes it

even more important to keep it on as close to 24 hrs./day as possible

for now. But of course I'm sure your guys' Dr. will talk to you about

Cole personally!

5. Diapering techniques are the same as with the cast, in fact it

looks JUST like the cast only it's plastic! I've been usually pull-

ups on her & wedging them up the front on back so pee & poop stay off

the brace & undergarment fabric, luckily with it being plastic it's

easy to clean though! I'll post pics of it soon!

6. Again, this brace is just like the cast so mobility is the same,

it's about as thick as the fiberglass cast was so in actuality it's

pretty thin & I like that, it helps her mobility.. still something

giving her a stiff back though so regardless of what it is she can't

roll around & bend like normal of course, but it's barely noticable

under her clothes too just like the thin fiberglass cast.

7. DEFINITELY like the brace better, LOVE the fact we can remove it

for baths & I can cuddle her little body!! And get her all nice &

cleaned up every day or every other day, no smelliness or dirty under

garment with the ability to keep her and it clean, it's great!! What's

even greater is that at anytime I can stick my fingers/hand through

the back hole of her brace & feel her spine line up along that

straight line of the hole right where her curve is (I used to do this

with the cast too) & feel that her spine feels totally straight in it

which makes me more comfortable with the " taking on & off " aspect.. if

that makes sense to you?? (I don't worry that it's on wrong or

something because I can always check & feel if it's being held

straight!)

Are you going to Shriner's to have it made? It's great how it's just

like the cast's shape! Good luck to you guys & keep us posted!

Take care,

Joy & Sol

Also, BTW, in terms of " up keep " haveing a the brace is definitely

more time consuming, the on and off removal & time to stick the

under body sock to it, she doesn't mind though (anymore.. did at

first) I just give her something good to munch on & put a favorite

video on of hers & she lets me do what I need to do.. more effort on

my part though compared to having an unremovable cast that I didn't

have to tend to really, the rward of being able to have it off it

well worth the time to me though!!!

these are the shirts lexi wears under her braces. what i like about

them is that they seem to help wick the moisture better. while she

does sweat under them, they seem to absorb alot! she rarely has skin

irritation due to sweat. also, these things seem small but they

stretch to get on and seem to conform to the body. i know joy

mentioned the wrinkking effect under the brace, which we don't seem

to have with this material. even after washing over and over, they

don't seem to lose their elasticity.

of course they do not sell to individuals, but if you could find an

orthotics place that sells this brand, you might want to look into

them.

This is the shirt that my daughter wears under her brace as well and our

daughter also has never had any skin problems using these--even in the hot humid

summer! We also got them from our brace maker.

i just love these shirts christine! you are right about the heat and humidity.

i can't remember where you are, but in texas it is miserable. i have stocked up

on about 8 of these things and i cherish them!! lol we got about 4 of them with

her braces and i purchased an additional 4 so i don't have to wash them all the

time. i don't know how much you pay for yours, but they are a little pricey

here, but well worth it...to me anyway.

Thanks everyone for the tips on undershirts and places to get them. All of your

input is very important to us. We are counting down the days until the cast

comes off, but want to be prepared with undershirts, braces issues, etc.

Thaks again.

We just have the 3 that the brace guy gave us, because he said they were

really pricey so we should just take care of them-we do laundry often!
