Guest guest
And what a lot has been achieved in those 100 years but still a long way to go. But do women have a shared vision of what they want? Or do we want different things? Enjoy the day and happy birthday Senate .. I no longer practice but it’s a lovely way to keep up with health visiting and school nursing but also to keep in touch with old friends and colleagues .. and have even made some new ones!! Guest guest
Can I echo Ann's comments - Happy Birthday SENATE. I am not sure we imagined we would still be going and sharing such important things when we started the group 11 years ago. But at least today we can celebrate success with health visiting and I think SENATE and its members has to take some responsibility and honour for that. Guest guest
Absolutely Margaret but also take the opportunity to celebrate your individual successes. I am going to a lunch celebrating IWD which will be awash with inspiring women just talking about what we’re achieving. I can hardly believe what I have achieved in the last 10 years having chosen to leave health visiting for the sake of my mental health .. lots to celebrate!! Guest guest
Hello Ann There is lots to celebrate and I am fascinated by where you come across powerful women and the predecessors of health visiting. I visited a botanical garden in Wales at the weekend set in grounds of a previously large estate and in reading the related material - one of the ancestors, a women, was a suffragette and did a lot clearly for the cause of women. I just smiled and thought that is where we as health visitors come from. Has anyone on SENATE other examples. Guest guest
Happy birthday SENATE. I think I joined about 8 or 9 years ago as a relatively newly qualified HV. I was looking around to find what resources were out there to help me survive. Since then I've moved posts a number of times, moving into public health and finding myself commissioning health visiting and now working on a range of areas - older people's public health, healthy urban development etc. Through all this I've found it an essential resource for keeping me up to date and for keeping my feet on the ground, it reminds me why I am here at work despite all the changes & complexity at the moment. The HV principles still guide what I do & how I work. ________________________________________ From: [ ] On Behalf Of Coles [lisa@...] Sent: 08 March 2011 14:54 Subject: RE: 100 + 11 Happy birthday SENATE. Guest guest
Hi Margaret, It’s all outside the health visiting world. Sadly I think the NHS culture squashes creativity, passion and individual power and authenticity. I am just amazed at women I meet outside of that environment who have their own stories to tell often with lots of sadness, illness, trauma etc but come up again to achieve amazing things. We are all capable of it. And I’m hoping my own story will be in print soon!!! Watch this space! Guest guest
Hello Margaret I don’t know about powerful but there are two anecdotes in my family that show strength of influence of health visiting and its predecessors. My mother was born in 1914 at the beginning of the first world war and was called Win, short for Winifred, as they were going to win the war (one of her older brothers had enlisted to fight). My mother’s second name was Alice which was the name of the ‘welfare lady’ who came to the home after a birth. I was told she was ladylike and came in a horse drawn vehicle. She diagnosed my grandmother as having a ‘white leg’, which according to http://www.thefreedictionary.com is a ‘painful thrombosis of the femoral vein in the leg following childbirth’. The story goes that my grandmother got care that she would not otherwise have had and it saved her from a worse situation. Definitely into prevention then! The second story concerns my own birth and how ‘the lady who came to the house’ got prompt and needed paediatric intervention. Interestingly in rural Wales I was referred to as ‘the lady who comes to the house’ by children sent to the clinic to ask for a home visit. In all of this one gets a sense of timely intervention, of being needed and available and able to act decisively with effect, which is powerful in the lives of those it affects. I do wonder if these family anecdotes influenced my own choice of career (well one of them!). Guest guest
Thank you and all senate members that have kept the group going over these 11 years. I appreciated belonging to senate when it was first launched. Although I left to be absorbed into PCT learning and development for a while, I was very pleased to learn you were still there when I joined the UCS SCPHN course a year ago. A year on I have found the information gained from being a senate member invaluable as have my colleagues and students. The difference in participants from the course is incredible and what Health Visiting and School Nursing needs. As Ann says "Watch this space" Margaret 100 + 11 Today is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day: a very worthy and important date. It is also Senate's 11th birthday. Guest guest
No, it is not being addressed. The question, at the moment, is whether leadership for school nurse development will emerge from inside the profession or from external research. There are significant questions that need attention, including the health of young people (the adolescent period). I would welcome reflection from colleagues.
