A challenge

Hi everyone -

I'm doing perfumery as a sideline right now, can't quit my day job just yet.

With a lot of traveling and subsequent catching up lately I haven't had time to

spend making perfumes. I do, however, get nearly a week off for the holidays

and have set myself a challenge.

Right now I'm very successful making perfumes for friends so I have what I call

my 'f'riends' line with about four of my favorites named after friends and I

have three nice 'pepper' blends (pink pepper, lemon pepper and green pepper).

I'm going to send these out as samples with Christmas orders. But I'd like to

challenge myself and do some of the ideas I've been thinking on.

So, the challenge to myself is to make four new perfumes between now and the new

year. One is going to be green, I've been totally fascinated by the green

scents I now have including violet leaf, clary sage absolute, galbanum. I may

add something very sweet like osmanthus or mimosa or go with tarragon ..... not

sure yet.

I'd also like to do something very heavy and rich being mostly base notes.

And floral? A sea island smell? I need to develop two others.

Maybe there are others on the list who need to set aside time from a job, other

business concerns, etc. How would you challenge yourself? It sounds like Ayala

is having fun with her truffle challenge!

How about something like tarragon, clary sage, green peppercorn and

Lime zest, Anya. Mmmmmm.

I'm only a beginner, but I just wanted to share something I have

learned. When I first started making my own blends I would start with

a 'solid concept' which then (through making many mistakes) would

start to turn into a 'realisation' which basically would strip

everything away and lead me from the ground up all over again. I

learned that it is a process of letting go and holding back, (after I

have held on and jumped in of course). In a way I end up with

something of which the initial concept was only a tiny part (or

sometimes a part not to be included at all). Now my initial concepts

aren't so rigid anymore and I am already letting go of them almost

*before* I start.

I always go back to painting and drawing as a simile, let go of the

fact that the subject is a face or whatever and just draw what is

visable, for example the shape of the inside corner of the eye that

looks like an eagles beak. When the drawing is complete, stand back

and lo and behold like magic the face appears.

I'm probably not making any sense at all!

But hey! It *is* a Friday night!!!(sorry Saturday morning)
