Guest guest
reposting -- it seems many are on vacation or just not checking in on the internet, since traffic is waaaay down. Maybe I'll need to extend this contest a week or so to make sure everybody sees it. >Hi Everyone: > >The mods and I realized it's been too long since one of our fragrant >contests.....so.... > >I've been touting this book on this group forever. When I first read this post, my mind went into overdrive. It's fun to really, purposely look at how scents influence and weave throughout a day. I'm very aware of this, and yet it looked differently, thinking of how to put it in writing. I'm not a professional perfumer, even though I've been involved for a long time, so my day wouldn't have a lot of elements which would be present in someones day, doing it as business. The wonderful and offensive mingle and inspire, the need to create something especially beautiful seems to turn into a compulsion, the longer (or more intensely) I'm exposed to something torturing my olefactory senses. There are the inspirations from incredible known and unknown scents, which challenge to be captured. My actual work is done mostly in the early morning hours. Often I steal a little time, when something has been on my mind too intensely, just because I have to see where this might go. And yet, scents, perfumes, the arranging and dance of different combinations and possibilities are always on my mind. Often I get a quick " fix " of NP, checking messages, or archives, even browsing member websites, dreaming of what could be. And dreaming is fine. I have a nice collection of my own scents I love to wear, which is constantly growing, lots of beautiful material, to make something new and different when I just " don't have anything to wear. " Which is usually the case with anything one has a little too much of. So, even though I'm creating perfumes, I don't think I qualify to enter this contest, not considering myself a perfumer -yet (still dreaming...) but I want to thank you for inspiring this thought, and I'm very much looking forward to the responses. Thanks again, ne
Guest guest
Hi Everyone: The mods and I realized it's been too long since one of our fragrant contests.....so.... I've been touting this book on this group forever. I first got it in 1976 and used the Carles method of comparison and contrasting to develop my knowledge of scent strength, longevity and interaction. This method is still taught in Grasse as a basis for perfumery studies. The book is lavishly illustrated with photos of the raw materials, bottles through the ages, processing and packaging. There are essays by Carles and Roudnitska. I treasure it and grab copies at good prices whenever possible to give as gifts. I myself cut up a copy early on to create a usable study booklet, as the book itself is huge and unwieldy for the perfumer's table. The winner may decide to take the easier route and just xerox them, but back in the day the copies of the book were rather cheap and the pictures made nice wall art, too. Today, the prices can vary from about $25 if you're lucky to $100 (typical of a signed copy, shown here) : http://tinyurl.com/yb74dw So here's the contest: Post a message to the group about the " A Day in the Life of a Nose " . Show us how you move through the world governed by your nose and how it has changed your life. The contest will run through Wed. Jan 3, 2007. The moderators will choose the name of the winner randomly, so everyone has an equal chance of winning. The book will be shipped Miami Florida. Open to all members from all countries. Good luck, and let us hear of your typical day! I didn't know whether to start a new thread or post on this one, so I am just submitting my entry on this one post. Thanks! _______________________________________ A Day in the Life of a Nose I awaken.... slowly... Grasping at the fast evaporating memory of that perfect scent clearly formed in my dreams, but tantalizingly out of reach from my reality It curls away, like tendrils of fog, awaiting another night, another dream, to taunt me again. Since the day I discovered my need, I have searched and dreamed for the perfect scent, the flawless blend, the blend that is me. So close, and yet so far. Reality time... as I move through the day, every scent triggers a memory, one infintessimal second of memory, and with the memory an action... Coffee. I need coffee... Nutty, deep, strong and dominating, it permeates my mind, my soul, enabling me to clear my faculties and begin my day. The pull of lingering smoke from last night's final cigarette, dangles in the air like a dull ornament. Leather... my purse smells of leather... and in the air, lingering bits of various scents, sweet, sour, sharp, musty, my dog, each note individually definable, but together, make up the scents of my home... who I am. As I move through my day, every smell triggers a new moment. A new thought. Some fleeting, some tenacious, hints of excruciating joy, and depthless sorrow... A whiff of pine... taking me back to my first trip to a jungle forest... a pine forest, with oak trees, covered with dangling spanish moss... A whiff of salt... the ocean... the smell of the water... and the lively fish that swim beneath the bouncing waves... A whiff of rain... ozone... clean, alive, rejuvenating, renewal... the waiting greenery thirsting for replenishment. To refresh and reawaken... both the plant and me... A whiff of old perfume... the favorite, worn by an old friend now gone. That last moment forever stored in that synaptic connection, from the last time I smelled that perfume, and today, when a stranger wore it. She doesn't look like my friend... I miss her. When the day is done... it's time to dream again... to fall into the embrace of last night's memory of the perfect fragrance. The perfect blend of ecstasy and agony. The definition of my essence. It's there, in my mind, and I will find it... maybe.
