Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, I feel that we need to lobby parliament as a health visiting group as we get lost within nursing generally. It is important that the public know that health visiting has problems, as many clients do not necessarily make the link. I am glad that there is a level of activity within the CPHVA, but I really do feel that we need to keep up the pressure. I am devestated for my group who have worked exeptionally hard, are coming towards the end of their years course and now wonder whether it is worth carrying on. I am working hard on keeping up morale and that is why I am encouraging them to make their voices heard. I do not want the majority of them to have to go back to previous jobs in nursing (if they can get any) and we lose them forever- what a waste. Many of them are young, and we need them desparately. They will as a group certainly be lobbying local MPs as I am encouraging them to be pro-active rather than just fall into a state of despair. Guest guest
I hate to spoil a good story but it is worth remembering that we are where we are today because of the CPHVA. It was the CPHVA who lobbied the government to deregulate health visiting in 2001. Government ministers, especially Hutton, repeatedly reminded all of us opposed to the deregulation of the profession that he and athe government had the support of the CPHVA. As a passionately committed health visitor who fought within and outside the CPHVA to retain the profession it is now my view that the profession has passed that crucial tipping point and is in terminal decline. I have just taken over a workload of several thousand children with a staff of 2,7WTE Health Visitors all I can do is measure the suffering. Where were you cheryl in 2001 when we demonstrated outside the TUC awhilst CPHVA Staff and Executive marched past us to endorce the death of our profession. I now separate Amicus, the Union from the CPHVA, the least of whose sins was the betrayal of the profession, the much greater sin has been the suffering of children in this country since 2001. I still have the archieve of that shameful time. both trade unions and the nursing profession like to rewrite history but i refuse to let the CPHVA forget their actions in 2001 Daly former professional officer CPHVA and Health Visitor {Spam?} two media events >> >> >> The CPHVA have just announced two media events: >> >> Amicus/CPHVA Director, Reay and one of the UK's experts on health >> visiting, Professor Cowley will be interviewed on BBC Four's You >> and Yours programme between 12 noon -1.00pm tomorrow, (Wednesday, 17 >> May) on the crisis facing the health visiting profession. >> >> Channel Four News tomorrow (Wednesday, 17 May) will be screening a >> report on the potential takeover of a Derbyshire GP practice by an >> American multi-national, which could have drastic implications for >> Amicus Health members and the public at large. >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >>
Guest guest
It makes painful reading but have to say you are so right - the message out there is we no longer have a professional organization and these when asked I tell people we are not being supported nationally - it was 10 years in March (a decade ago) when I left the HVA and then you all followed - I blame myself sometimes for not succession planning but I really thought the profession was string enough to survive - how wrong I was. But in some ways I can also be positive and I think it will come back - maybe slightly different but that will be despite of rather than because of Margaret Re: {Virus?} RE: {Spam?} two media events I hate to spoil a good story but it is worth remembering that we are where we are today because of the CPHVA. Guest guest
I agree margaret. given there is no longer a profession of health visiting the key task now is to try to ensure that whatever replaces it serves families and children at least as well as health visiting did. Part is that is to ensure history is not rewritten and lessons are learned mary {Spam?} two media events >>> >>> >>> The CPHVA have just announced two media events: >>> >>> Amicus/CPHVA Director, Reay and one of the UK's experts on health >>> visiting, Professor Cowley will be interviewed on BBC Four's You >>> and Yours programme between 12 noon -1.00pm tomorrow, (Wednesday, 17 >>> May) on the crisis facing the health visiting profession. >>> >>> Channel Four News tomorrow (Wednesday, 17 May) will be screening a >>> report on the potential takeover of a Derbyshire GP practice by an >>> American multi-national, which could have drastic implications for >>> Amicus Health members and the public at large. >>> >>> >>> >>> >>> >>> >>> >>>
Guest guest
We are facing hugh and grave challenges to the service, with the financial deficits there are planned cuts both in service provision and staff numbers across the Country. The DH clearly has not done a U turn on its "privatisation of the NHS", despite the rhetoric we heard following the withdrawal of the Crisp letter and it seems now that the "RCN challenge" was indeed a hollow victory. Certainly across many regions many clinical posts are being frozen. What are our professional leaders doing and what about our PEC nurses, as each organisation has elected these on to the committees, who are making the decision? Who needs to be held to accountable?? Guest guest
LEADERSHIP – I am not sure nursing in terms of central government staff, knows what that is. They i.e, government spent a lot on leadership training for nurses and AHPs but I am not sure where it got us and I also know they cannot cope with leaders who challenge and develop and grow services – the wish to do this seems like a fallacy to me!! I feel soap boxy tonight – I think gat me going but where are our principles about facilitating and influencing policy – thre is so much to do – so0 lets get on with it!! Guest guest
Hi , I remember 2001 too, when I was one of those outside the TUC protesting. I feel so strongly about this issue that I have been once again fired up into action. I feel that I have a moral obligation to my students to raise this issue, and we are indeed going to be proactive in lobbying MPs etc. However I believe it is a wider issue, and students qualifying this year are merely pawns in the governments wider agenda. I personally would however like to see the CPHVA be more proactive. It is important that the public realise what is happening to health visitors and that it does not just come under the umbrella of 'nursing.' One of my CPTs told me the other day that in a Trust not far from us 15 health visitors have been given redundancy letters. How does this equate with delivering quality care to clients? It seems that health visiting is a 'soft target' for cuts, and that now a whole range of people can take on 'aspects of the role'. It feels a bit like 'never mind the quality, as long as its cheap.' My greatest concern is for our many vulnerable clients. I don't have a problem with skill mix if it is used for the right reasons. If however we are going to see it established as a way of working to reduce the number of qualified health visitors to a bare minimum, I really do believe that we are in terminal decline. When this government came to power it recognised the importance of health visiting in a number of documents, now it would appear that we are too expensive, and that there is a lack of commitment (understanding) of what health visitors can do that other members of the skill mix team cannot. Hewitt's perception of the health service might be a positive one. Perhaps she would like to come and meet my students who certainly don't share her optimism. {Spam?} two media events >> >> >> The CPHVA have just announced two media events: >> >> Amicus/CPHVA Director, Reay and one of the UK's experts on health >> visiting, Professor Cowley will be interviewed on BBC Four's You >> and Yours programme between 12 noon -1.00pm tomorrow, (Wednesday, 17 >> May) on the crisis facing the health visiting profession. >> >> Channel Four News tomorrow (Wednesday, 17 May) will be screening a >> report on the potential takeover of a Derbyshire GP practice by an >> American multi-national, which could have drastic implications for >> Amicus Health members and the public at large. >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >>
Guest guest
Dear Margaret This is so true. Leadership and empowerment are about a lot of deconstruction of hallowed practices that many have a vested interest in maintaining. This includes the marketing of diseases and learned helplessness and the agencies necessary to deal with them. If Health Visitors and others were really enabled and supported in their work, then we would be moving from needs-based dependency and illness models towards capacity-based and health ones…in which very expensive (espy) secondary/acute sector empires and institutions would have a much smaller place….Ho, ho…now we have Foundation Trusts….no power struggles there then?! No, many of us in primary care and in secondary care know these time-expired imperialistic activities are broken beyond measure. The quiet babbling brook (if not just babbling, but also flowing more confluently through networks such as this one) can gradually undermine the foundations, especially at a time of such mindless Centrism and overspend. I have been following the issues raised here over the last few days with both sadness and resolve. In the end, the jobs have to be done by people with the skills to do them. Time for a regrouping around these issues and some resolve? Systems rely on wearing people down though….apathy and exhaustion through endless consultation, where are the latest entrants into the profession in their thinking on all this?
