Arctander, God attest, is like trying to apply Pope Innocent III to Vatican II!!!!! As an historian, this girl appreciates & understangs Arctander, but the guy has been rotting for a time long passed since CO2, SCO2, Molecular Dist. arrived on the scene. Though I believe 's Jonquil Abs. is/was solvent extracted, the fact remains that if we keep hangin' our hats on the Arctander Corpse, we'll perish with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As an >historian, >this girl appreciates & understangs Arctander, but the guy has been >rotting for >a time long passed since CO2, SCO2, Molecular Dist. arrived on the scene. A bit harsh, don't you think, Ezzie? With your wish to toss out the classics, what would we be left with ? No Poucher, no Carles, no Piesse, Ducasse, no nuttin? They're all, ahem, decomposing, but their lucid and illuminating writings on the goodies we love lives on. Last night TV stank like a dime store cologne, so I sat and red Arctander, just for fun, I'm that kind of silly thing. If anyone has written a book as well-grounded as Arctanders on the CO2, SCO2, isolates, etc., please let us know, and I'll snap that up for my library, too. Well, the flavoring industry must have such references, since the CO2s were developed for that industry, correct? I figure I've spent 30 years trying to master the classics, I can patiently wait for my experiments with the new stuff until they prove themselves. >Though I believe 's Jonquil Abs. is/was solvent extracted, the >fact >remains that if we keep hangin' our hats on the Arctander Corpse, we'll >perish >with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And here I was, thinking Arctander was a light in the darkness that made living, breathing Natural Perfumery come alive ;-) Just goes to show you, perspective is everything! PS - there are several species of jonquils (jonquilli, poeticus) that can go into the making of jonquil abs. check with your supplier which ones you have. You should also ask for the GCs, and make sure you're buying from a reputable dealer. There's a lot of bogus jonquil out there. What suppliers did you use? That's open for discussion, and the education on the different jonquils can help us all. This doesn't sound like appreciation or understanding to me! You have the right to express your opinion, of course. But don't you think by saying such things as " ...the guy has been rotting for a long time... " and " ...if we keep hangin' our hats on the Arctander Corpse, we'll perish with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " you are being very disrespectful of a human being who is deceased. How would a member of Steffan Arctander's family feel if they read what you have written? Or how would you feel if someone said this about you or your deceased relatives? When professionals disagree, they criticize by using intelligent arguments to make a point, not by using disrespectful language. Ezzie, I believe you owe an apology to the Arctander family and to us NP members who read what you wrote. Mark

Well, I understand that Arctander's volume has not been updated since he passed away, but I still feel it is of tremendous value to natural perfumery. Certainly, I would not hang my hat on any one author or expert - I tend to like to research in a number of places and come to a conclusion based on that (thus posing my question to the NP group). The green-earthy one is from the Essential Oil Company. They both list the species and origin as narcissus jonquilla from France. They both smell very " natural " to me, both interesting too- but different. I purchased a the bottle of jonquil from the Essential Oil Company when my curiousity got the best of me and I decided I absolutely needed to try the jasmine and tuberose florasol ( Wilde) -they are amazing on first sniff - I still need sit down and give them a proper examination. The tuberose florasol seems to emphasize a bright almost wintergreen like topnote compared to the deep creaminess of tuberose absolute. I love both. Precious (expensive) stuff.)
