It is heathier for someone else to nurse your baby then for you to give your own milk in a bottle! Amazing. I am nursing a two and half year old and a almost 7 month old. Luckily I feel very supported by my family and friends (who most do extended nursing) but a lot of the time in public I feel like I'm getting stared at and the enviroment is so uncomfortable. Guest guest Posted January 28, 2006 Report Share Posted January 28, 2006 My daughter nursed her oldest till he was nearly 3 and a half. She just weaned him a few months ago. She was also tandem nursing too. Jozlyn is now 9 months old and would rather nurse than eat solids! LOL. DD was feeding her homemade baby foods (from her organic garden) but the little stinker wanted nothing to do with it. I finally suggested she start her on foods with more texture like oatmeal and she loves that! I nursed my youngest till she was 9 months old and wanted to go longer but she refused. She wanted the cup only and after two months I finally gave up. The good information out there on nursing is great to see. When I was doing it 26 years ago, it was the " new " " in " thing. LOL. We really did not know all the wonderful things about nursing, it was more of a " movement " than anything. In ways it was a good start to people taking back health and medical decisions and care. We started to question what we were told and why should we do what they were saying. Why formula? Why antibiotics? What did Grandma do when they did not have all the " wonderful medicines " and such??? How do we prevent getting sick? What is being put into our foods? We started to put on the breaks instead of following blindly. Thank God. We were lucky enough to have two wonderful doulas that gave us a lot of really great info about breastfeeding and no circumsion with our first and a beautiful homebirth with our second. She is pumping a lot of milk now and freezing it. She offered to give it to anyone who can use it. Please put the word out. This is the way it should be! (IMHO) Like they say, breast is best! I so with people were more like this when my babies were young. Blessings! And a family member is a doctor and has told me it can be used even a little longer than that but they advise a year for legal reasons. I know I had some in the freezer that I gave to my daughter after 14 months and it was fine. And I was so thankful to have it too. I had pumped like crazy in the beginning as a " just in case " supply and then when I unexpectedly got pregnant with my second when my first was just 6 months, my milk dried up about 1/2 way through my pregnancy. I tried to keep it up....let her nurse all night, etc. but I just couldn't keep producing, so when she was 10 months old I could no longe nurse her, but I had plenty of frozen milk to give her for quite a while!! My girls are now 23 months and 7 months and I am nursing my 7 m/o and I am trying to pump as much this time... The hospital should be able give the baby her bottles rather than formula. And lots of kangaroo care (skin-to-skin contact)? Good for her. We did " kangaroo care " , wish we could have done it more. I pumped my milk for her, brought some every time we went to see her (which was almost every day, we only missed 1 or 2 days in the 1 1/2 months she was at MCMC; didn't miss any when she was at North Memorial for another month). I had to ASK the nurses to not add formula to my milk. Make sure you are eating PLENTY of GOOD fat. I wish I had known this with my preemie.
