PT question

Hello,

I think some of you have had to deal with this, so hoping for some advice.

About a year ago at one of our IEP meetings, the PT said because Austin was

not in PE, his services were not needed at that time because it was not

academically necessary. I asked, when he was back in PE services would

resume and he said yes. So now, PE is a class Austin is in this year, and

one week into school I requested the PT to start up again. Received a

message from the PT, that there really wasn't anything he could do for

Austin, just to be patient with him, and not expect him to be able to do

what the regular Ed kids can do. My mouth about hit the floor when I heard

this.

We pressed the issue and the PT did come out to evaluate Austin, then I

received a message, that he felt Austin was doing great and what exactly was

it that we wanted/our concerns. How would you guys address this? Any input

would be greatly appreciated!

Our PT was stopped mid elementary school age because he was walking, running,

and getting around good. That seemed to be about all they were interested in

for PT.

We ended PT about age 3 1/2 -4, once was walking well and

starting to run. They said that it wasn't educationally necessary

(which is wasn't), but did provide an adapted PE teacher. During the

preschool years, the APE teacher worked 1:1 with on areas to

improve her coordination, balance, and large muscle skills. Boy, you

should have seen Miss Kathy turn the jump rope with such skill that

every child, if they could jump even 1 " Miss Kathy could swish that rope

under their feet at just the right time.... it was amazing, and the kids

were so proud. Success certainly fostered a love of jump rope, which

took with her to the kindergarten playground. They also threw

beanbags, bounced balls, walked on balance beams, climbed ladders and

steps, and other fun activities.

We designed APE goals that would allow to be independent on

the playground with her peers, so goals focus on climbing, running,

jumping, throwing, etc. I think about 1st grade, we went down to

1x/week, and then in 3rd grade, had the APE teacher show up during

regular PE and observe and see if needed anything adapted,

consult with the regular ed teacher, etc. If there were not pullouts

for other things, I'd love the 1:1 with the APE teacher, but I think

needs to be in the classroom more than in PE. isn't

a star athlete by any means, but she can play happily on the playground

and play equipment, participate in regular PE with her peers, etc. so

we're OK with this " consult " model APE.

Your school must have an APE teacher..... has anyone suggested that this

might be a good alternative to PT?
