Is that the one & Noble is offering? They have one now with color. FWIW though, my friend Natasha's husband (a computer scientist married couple--I don't seem to know anyone else these days) says that the current Kindle has the best resolution.

Re: Re: OT: now Kindle

The Kindle is great, but those considering purchasing might want to consider an ipad-it is an AMAZING ereader, and has sooooooo many more functions. I basically have replaced my laptop with my ipad.

I'm also looking forward to moving some of my recipes from my computer to the kindle so I can just take it to the kitchen and make whatever recipe I want.

I love my kindle. I got a lot of good free ebooks from the gutenberg

project.

I have an iPad and use it as an ereader, a picture frame, cookbook and a host of other things. If you wait till next month iPad II should be announced and the iPad might go down in price. If you do not plan on using it outside your house then you really do not need the 3G which will save you money in the long run. tlong

The basic ipad WILL connect to wi fi anywhere with no additional monthly fee. You pay a monthly fee if you want 3G connectivity, but that is something I personally don't need. I love the slimness of the Kindle, but the versatility of the ipad. Both are gadgets worthy of exploring. I am allergic to soy based ink, which is in MOST books, newspapers, etc. The ipad has made it possible for me to read everything I want online. Love having THAT joy back!

Not to argue, but I own both the Kindle and ipad. You do NOT need the monthly fee for the ipad, and you CAN read your books anywhere, even if not within range of wi fi. The monthly fee is if you want to be connected to the internet anywhere. I find that I can find hotspots pretty much everywhere I go. I am not saying one is better than the other, but please don't miss state about features you may not be aware of.

Mine has wifi and 3g. I love browsing the internet while on the road, with

no monthly fees. the web browser is functional, but leaves a bit to be

desired. It was a christmas gift, and I'm starting to replace the library

I lost in the house fire.

I did not say you need the monthly fee but if you want the equiv. internet service that kindle offers for free on the ipad you must pay a monthly fee.   i stated once a book is loaded you do not even need the internet.  you might find hotspots but my point was i dont have to even look for any...the internet is on my kindle ready to roll anywhere and for free.  what did i miss state?  pam

I also have both. I like the kindle books on my iPad. Can you buy a kindle book from amazon without owning the device? If you can't then are you restricted to buying books from the apple store? I've never fooled around with it because I just buy a kindle book and have it sent to my iPad.Sent from my iPadOn Jan 8, 2011, at 5:06 PM, Berry <berrywell@...> wrote:

You don't need a kindle to buy kindle books. The free kindle app for your

computer is sufficient.

You can get the Kindle and/or Nook app for the ipad from the app store. You can also download it onto any pc or mac for free. It also works on my ipod touch. My ONLY complaint about either, is that they rarely offer any online discounts for ebooks, and often charge more than the hard cover version of the actual book! I have bitched long and loud to them for years about this, of course to no avail. I often get coupons via email, but they cannot be applied to ebooks. THAT pisses me off! >> >>> > > That's

Well that's great. I'll have to share that. I do like my Kindle device tho.

Still I tend to use my iPad more. I can quickly switch from reading to check

I've found the kindle versions are usually a bit cheaper than the hard

copy, and there's no shipping. If I have a gift certificate applied to my

account, that gets applied before my credit card.

They will honor gift certificates, but not coupons. That is my gripe. When I purchased mine, they had me sign up for the email service, which sends boat loads of coupons, NONE of which apply to MY purchase-I find that disturbing.

With the Nook I don't pay a monthly fee. Also there is a huge amount of free ebooks to download. Many of the ebooks I download are only a couple of dollars. My internet is free with Nook. I'm not sure why anyone would have to pay a monthly fee. Does Kindle charge all those extra fees????

, Every time I go into a and Noble I ask when the ebooks will get the same discount as a hardcover. If we keep after them maybe they will eventually cave in and let us have the on line discounts. After the ebooks are available for a little while they are at a much lower price. I have been following a few bestsellers to gage when the best time to buy is.

>> >>> > > That's what my son told me when I asked him which OS I>> > ought to be>> > > using; he is a computer guru type

Great idea, Char. Perhaps if we all stay on their case...>> >>> > > That's what my son told me when I asked him which OS I>> > ought to be>> > > using; he is a computer guru

I agree. They are very expensive for only being an e-reader. You can get a

tablet like an Ipad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab for just a little more. The Galaxy

is 7 " , about the size I was looking at. Then download the free kindle app. It's

a great e-reader and everything else a computer offers too.

The Galaxy is the only tablet that Verizon Wireless supports. But if you have a

smart phone with the Android 2.2 or later, you can tether (wirelessly) to a

tablet or laptop and have internet service on any of them. I've been researching

this lately trying to decide which way to go. Still haven't decided.

BTW, I didn't see that anyone gave the link to download the free kindle app.

an ipad-it is an AMAZING ereader, and has sooooooo many more functions.  I

basically have replaced my laptop with my ipad.

Char,No Kindle doesn't charge a monthly fee. All the info I researched said that Kindle has more free books than the Nook. One place even said twice as many. That probably wasn't figuring in the library books that can be borrowed or maybe the books available to borrow are the same ones that can be downloaded for free?Kim in OR> > > That's what my son told me when I asked him which OS I> ought to be > > using; he is a computer guru type person who likes> gaming. I started to look into the Nook at one point. I wanted to see what kind of books

they had available so looked into the free one. Before I could download I had to

register including giving them a credit card number. I stopped the registration

and emailed them to ask why...Got some lame excuse.

If the e book was free they should not have needed my credit card. I have

purchased lots of books from our and Nobel store. But I do not believe I

should have to give out credit card information for something that is supposed

to be free.

That said, living in Alaska a lot of the services (including phone companies and

internet services) are not available here at all, or only if you are in the

bigger cities like Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. Other areas get spotty or no

service. Same with satellite TV here. We can not get all the options that are

available int he lower 48 because there are more satellites pointed at your area

and only one which points to Alaska.

I love to read, and used to have a lot of books on my PDA before it died. I'm

not into the fancy smart phones, since the service here for the data and such is

so spotty I can't justify paying so much for them and the service required to

use them. Plus I will not buy one until I know that if I decide to change

services I can still use it and download books from wherever I choose, not just

from whomever sells the reader.

I guess you could say I am not really big on the proprietary limitations stuff.

Also why I use the free program Open Office instead of Microsoft office.

Just my two cents worth.

One nice feature is the ability to have any document you might have converted to your kindle. Say you have a brief you want to study while traveling. All you do is mail it to Amazon, they will convert it, for a small charge, and send it electronically to your Kindle. There is no monthly fee for a Kindle. I understand where you are coming from with the credit card info to B & N. I have a membership so they already had my credit card (I was ordering two or three books a month from them and Amazon). My B & N membership pays for itself many times over during the year. With my iPod through iTunes I had to download my credit credit. At first I didn't understand why it was necessary but after years with the iPod I now understand the convenience of it all. WE all love our toys. If I could justify the iPad I would have it but I just can't bring myself to pay that much for a toy. We all know that todays' toy will be replaced with the newer one in just a couple of months. If I hold out for a couple of years.......

I still use the hardcovers sometimes especially for recipes. Some cookbooks have been downloaded as well as magazines on my Nook Color. With the Kindle, I haven't really looked into it much. With the Nook Color, I think it may be a little more like the iPad, but I don't know. For anyone thinking about getting a Kindle or Nook Best Buy sells both so a comparision would be easy having them next to each other.
