Guest guest
If the people try and buy m & P from Sugar Bouquets, plus shipping, it will cost them as much as the craft stores. I know I started paying $10 per 2 lbs.when I first started too. Page 37 has two places for supplies, which are not all that cheap. Except I saw adds in the back from Sweetcakes and some of the other ones that we use with better prices. I thought I had finally found a craft that everybody and their mother didn't do, but I see this taking off real soon. Especially if a lot of the suppliers we use start advertising in this mag. Oh well, it is like every other craft, it is hard to keep it quiet. Kathy
Guest guest
Terri I agree with you there, and I cringed when I heard of this mag coming out. I have been working at my MP craft for a few years now, and,if this mag. becomes anything remotely popular, I can just about kiss my business goodbye. Not to mention a whole lot of people running out and suddenly becoming a business without **really** knowing anything about the properties of MP. I DO NOT want my soap being lumped into the same category as crap MP product --- like Bath and Body works. Will I buy it --- probably not. Doing so will only propagate its definite stay in the marketplace. Guest guest
OH!!! and to add...the gal I am working on the catalog order with...suddenly she has a SLEW of " soapmakers " out there wanting her to carry their stuff. How long have they been soaping? maybe 3 months. Suddenly they're professionals. ARGH!!!! Guest guest
Terri, I have to say I agree. I bought the mag, and was thinking the same things as you. Over my soaping years, I have encountered some "aquaintances" that have given soapmaking (both mp and cp) a try and trying to sell it because they saw that I was doing it, and how I was selling and doing pretty good with that. I dont particularly call these friends as they were trying to compete against me selling to my customers. Anyway, they gave it a try, saw that it isnt just a sunday walk in the park, and gave it up. Nothing is for everybody. So I'm not too too worried. Its a pretty good investment in supplies and FO's/EO's. and I dont think that the average joe will be willing to pay it for stuf for themselves, They may dream of selling and going into business but I betcha going in with this mentality of just to sell cuz its a cool thing to do, they will not last very long. I donno, its getting a LOT harder for people to make craft and sell (not just soapmaking either) because even the craft stores are selling finished crafts.. I see things very rapidly turning from handmade to purchased for resell... -----Original Message-----From: Terri Wagner [mailto:twaller@...]Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2001 3:33 PM Subject: Re: New Mag my 2 cents I had to go to the store this morning with my step mom and I found the new mag in P & C (Colleen the P & C in River Mall has it in isle 13) These are random thoughts here...if I repeat, sorry... Guest guest
Oh,no no no....it wasn't anyone from this list or any other(you guys are theonly ones whoI've told aboutthecatalog deal, though). Don't get me wrong! It's just that this gal told methat 'soapmakers' have been coming out of the woodwork in the past couple of months, all newbies (in MP or CP or HP), but since they think they have " mastered the art " in 3 months, they're ready to try to sell and become an official business. I will agree with Shaye on the start-up costs, though. It ain't cheap! Well, it ain't cheap to get QUALITY stuff....but we've all seen sub-quality work out there. maryG > YIKES ... I'm not one of those other soapmakers!!... how many lists did you tell your good news to? Could some from other lists be trying to step on your toes?? or is this a sign of the times to come?? *sigh* > Terri

Guest guest
Trademarking? Or even copyrighting...egadds...do you know how much that costs?? TONS! maryG > Also forgot to mention there were several suppliers mentioned for buying the ingredients cheaper than at the craft stores. It wouldn't have been too bad if they just listed the craft stores that carry the ingredients, but nooooo they have to give access to the cheaper suppliers. > > It might be worth trademarking some of your designs or own personal creations to keep them for you only. > > Terri

Guest guest
Here's a thought....if the people who buy the magazine and buy the Delta soap in the craft stores, that will deter them from staying in the craft. That stuff is awful!! It thickens up real fast and is hard to deal with. I had such a hard time the "one" time I bought some I emailed Delta and they ended up sending me a whole box of goodies...molds, more soap, paint, etc. But I still hate the stuff. And the price is exorbitant!! Nobody could sell their soaps and make a profit without selling it for at least $5.00/ bar every time. -Ilion Re: New Mag my 2 cents I had to go to the store this morning with my step mom and I found the new mag in P & C (Colleen the P & C in River Mall has it in isle 13) These are random thoughts here...if I repeat, sorry...
