Guest guest
Hi Bethany, Welcome to a NEW addiction (soapmaking)! Its an exciting and rewarding craft. I use EO's in all my soaps and I never have a problem. Some of your citrus oils such as sweet orange which, is a top note, need to be anchored with something else. Other than that I think you'll be fine using EO's. Many of us use eo's in our soaps - so a little trial an error is all you need. Have fun and let us know what you make for your frist batch and how it comes out. Mine was a lemon soap and it crumbled in my hands - that was many, many moons ago but I did not give up. Debra NY ----Original Message Follows---- From: " kidsngarden " <Bethany_pcc@...> Hi, I'm just starting out in soap (still waiting for my lye to come) and heard many EO's don't work well in soap? Some do and some don't? Opinions please? Bethany

I made a batch out of some clear glycerine M & P soap that had been sitting out a while. It turned the resulting bars white. Fortunately, I had embedded soap hearts in the bars and when cut up in sample sizes, it almost looks like white candied pineapple. Still smells great!!! Anita B. Guest guest
Peppermint is pretty strong so I tend to use less than many other essential oils in soap. I bought some handmade peppermint soap once and I had to relegate it to hand soap after it burned my armpits in the shower. I didn't get far with it... hubby thought it was " tingly " !! LOL! I love blending it with lavender, very refreshing in soap. Cin www.soapetc.com > > Thanks, . I like the peppermint, too. Guest guest
There are many who claim that EO in soap can irritate the skin, however, the consentration of EO in is generally not any way enough to cause any sensitivity, as there would be in a cream or lotion, or other toiletry which is a " leave on product " . With Melt and Pour Soap one must be careful as to amounts with skin sensitive EO's but if one uses 1 ts per 1 lb of M+P, it is generally enough for a nice scent, without causing any irritation. Baby soap should never contain any EO or FO due to skin sensitivity because baby skin is extremely sensitive to these products and they can be harmful to baby's skin. Since soap is a rinse off product, I, myself would not use spend money on expensive EO's, rather I would use a less expensive FO [fragrance oil] for scenting. I would use EO's in " leave on products " such as creams or lotion, for their skin benefits, [and scent], where they will do the most good when left " on " the skin andthus it is very important to not only use the less skin sensitive EO's [such as mints] but to use them in the proper amounts to " benefit " the skin without irritating the skin. Knowing the properties of the herbs/botanicals used to make the EO is important to know which EO's one should use for the desired result. Here again, one would not choose say peppermint in a baby lotion, but one would choose calendula because it has such soothing and healing properties. Back to peppermint soap--Men especially love mint soaps, peppermint being the most widely made soap among soapers. So it is not just a foot soap but a very invigorating scent for men. hth, Sherry Natural Care E-books, booklets, spreadsheets www.herbalsoap-healingcreams.com
