Note you have to be healthy to take the live flu vaccine!

The flu vaccine (Killed virus) is for more vulnerable types.

Yet the LIVE MMR vaccine is fine for all!!!!!!

U.S. approves flu vaccine in nasal spray form

Associated Press Updated: Wed. Jun. 18 2003 9:29 AM ET

WASHINGTON — Most people who avoid flu shots because they fear needles will not have that excuse this season. The Food and Drug administration has approved a flu vaccine that is delivered by a squirt up the nose instead of a shot in the arm.

The vaccine, called FluMist, was approved Tuesday by the FDA for healthy people age 5 to 49, but not for people who often are in most need of protection from the flu: toddlers, the elderly and people with asthma or some other chronic diseases.

For children from 5 to 8, the first exposure to FluMist requires two doses six weeks apart. Patients from 9 to 49 need only one dose, the agency said.

The safety and effectiveness of FluMist has not been proven for people 50 and over. The FDA encouraged those patients to get the injected flu vaccine.

FluMist was not approved for patients under 5 because in clinical trials researchers found that young children treated with the nasal mist vaccine had a higher rate of asthma attacks and wheezing within 42 days of the vaccination, compared to children who received a placebo.

Approval of FluMist achieves a goal of many flu experts: a needle-free alternative to the annual shot. Some believe this may encourage more people to be vaccinated against flu.

FluMist contains each of the three influenza live virus strains expected to be active during the 2003-2004 flu season. These include two types of influenza A, which causes severe illness, and one type of influenza B, which causes a milder form of the disease. The live virus in the vaccine has been weakened so that it produces immunity without causing illness.

Influenza is the cause of 36,000 deaths annually in the United States. Most of the victims are patients with other health problems, children under 2 and people over 65.

"This new vaccine provides another option for protection against influenza and will potentially increase the availability of the injected killed virus vaccine for those at highest risk," Dr. Mark B. McClellan, the FDA commissioner, said in a statement.

There have been vaccine shortages at the beginning of some flu seasons in the past, because there are few manufacturers of the drug and the formula must be changed each year to match the changes in the circulating virus.

FluMist is manufactured by MedImmune Vaccines Inc. of Gaithersburg, Md. A company spokesperson said that the company is now taking orders for the drug and that 4 million to 6 million doses will be available by October, the start of the flu season. The company said FluMist will cost about $46 a dose. This is more than twice the typical cost of injected flu vaccine.

The company in July 2001 sought FDA approval to market FluMist for children, but FDA's advisers said the drug had not been proven safe for them. MedImmune revised its application, and it was endorsed with reservations by the advisers last year.

Clinical studies showed that although FluMist provided flu protection for 93 per cent of the 1,600 healthy children tested, there was a 1.5 per cent incidence of asthma attacks or wheezing among children under 5.

The advisory panel agreed with MedImmune's decision to limit childhood use of FluMist to those over 5.

Studies showed that FluMist did not provide the same flu protection for adults from 50 to 64 as vaccinations. For adults from 18 to 49, the studies suggested FluMist reduced severe illness.

An FDA statement said FluMist should not be given to persons with compromised immune systems, such as patients with AIDS, cancer or organ transplants. The agency also said that the safety of the nasal vaccine has not been demonstrated for patients with asthma or some other reactive breathing disorders.

People with underlying medical conditions who would be most seriously affected by a flu infection should receive the injected form of vaccine, the agency said.

FluMist also is not recommended for people who are allergic to eggs or who have demonstrated an earlier allergic reaction to flu vaccine.

Isabella ,

Yes, I've not only heard about FluMist, but

written about it in some of the review pieces,

including ones you were sent.

In addition to the danger to children under 5,

anyone innoculated is supposed to remain in

quarantine for not less than 21 days to ensure

that the innoculated person is not a " Typhoid "

infecting others with whom they interact.

The company's estimate of inoculee transmission is

" 0.6 to 2.4% " -- so that the inoculee can infect

others for up to 21 days.

Furthermore, because the influenza strains are

only " cold adapted " (to be " only " virulent/

" replicating " at 25 to 28 degrees C) there is

nothing to prevent the FluMist virus from " interacting "

with wild influenza strains, including those from

the " avain flu, " and generating new strains that

are more virulent and/or more transible between

humans.

Hope that this information will be of help to you.

Respectfully,

Dr. King

Someone was saying that her school's district gave the flu mist and

kids got sick. I wonder why?

According to the FDA website's influenza page regarding the live flu

vaccine FluMist:

What are the most common side affects of FluMist?

Nasal congestion

Runny nose

Sore throat

Headache

Irritability

Decreased activity

Muscle ache and

Cough

I was the one whose school district did that. I read the prescribing

info. What gets me the most is that it clearly states that close

contact, and uses living together as a rule of thumb, should be

avoided for 21 days with immune-compromised individuals. It just so

happens my daughter is very immune-compromised. I would consider

sitting in class, eating next to each other, and using the same

bathroom to be " close contact. "

Whether or not flumist given caused my daughter to miss the entire

last week of school because of illness cannot be proven; however, my

daughter is far from the only immune-compromised student in our

system. Of course, many of those who are immune-compromised are sped

and in my district sped students don't count as worthy of counting for

anything, except warehousing projections.

  • 3 years later...

I watch a just turned 3 year old along w/my 2 1/2 yr old daughter. Her

older sister didn't have school today. I found out from her older sister that

last week at their doctor appt they both got the flu mist. It just amazes me.

The little girl I watch is sick A LOT. She had a cold when they gave her

the mist. Two weeks later, she still has the cold. Her older sister is

coughing up a lung as well. fortunately hasn't gotten sick. She rarely

does

catch anything. I know it's because she isn't vaxed, was breastfed, eats

healthy, and plays outside a lot. Why don't others see this?? They always

comment on how is so healthy and so smart. I'm thinking it's pretty

obvious! Follow my health plan and you could have the same.

It's kinda like AP parenting. I have normal kids so yeah, they are

disobedient but overall, they're OK kids. very happy though. everyone

comments on how happy and smiley my babies are. And I think 'it's not rocket

science. I cuddle them. I hold them. I play with them. I sleep right by

them.. rather, they by me.. I carry them when they want.. I meet their needs

and they are happy, independent kids.. and yet, everyone acts like they've

never seen such a happy baby. Maybe they're just feeling loved and secure? I

don't know. But the playpens and the walkers and the carriers and the

strollers and the bouncy seats and the cribs.. they all have their place but

they can't take the place of mama's arms.
