Hunger Doesn’t Always Predict How Much You’ll Eat FREE DAILY DIET TIP Sunday, September 24, 2006 You feel hungry, but just how hungry are you? Actually, it doesn’t matter – what really counts is how much food you serve yourself. You might have thought that the amount of food you pile on your plate has no effect on how much you end up eating, but research shows it may play a larger role than hunger in determining the actual quantity of food you’ll end up eating. According to a Cornell University study, adults eat 45% more popcorn if it’s served in a larger bucket without their knowledge. In other

words, your hunger doesn’t rule the roost – your serving size does. Well maybe you don’t eat popcorn at the movie theater, so what difference does it make to you? The point is, if you are in the bad habit of eating chips out of the bag, cookies right out of the box or piling your pasta on a large plate instead of using a smaller plate, you’re most likely eating more food than you should be. So anytime you serve yourself food, make a conscious effort to serve only what you want to allow yourself to eat and then go back for seconds later if you’re still hungry.
