I was heading to bed and I went in the kitchen to throw a paper bowl away and wash my hands. Something caught my eye. There was a snake in the middle of my kitchen window! Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.......

AAAaaaaah!! I will shriek now anyway!! I don't know what it is tonight with God's creatures wanting to be inside, but I was lying on the floor watching t.v. tonight and a HUGE black ant was crawling across the floor. I yelled to my 13 yr old ds to smash the "ant on radiation" LOL, so he smashed it with a book and the thing was still wiggling around. OK, not as freaky as your 4 ft snake, but still!! Got me off the floor!!

I called from the study and he came in and was fascinated by it and called it beautiful. Hmmmm...... Lynn (9) came out of her room and asked what was going on and she was fascinated by it too.

OK, caged in like that I might be fascinated too!

Lynn wanted to wake up Vonn (6) but she's finally gotten over being afraid of everything so I didn't want her to see a 4 foot long snake outside the kitchen window. Poor kid would need years of therapy.

I would need years of therapy after having that in my house too....

This darn snake was climbing up the brick around the window. soon realized that it was heading straight for the birds nest nearby.

Dinner time!

We knocked on the window but that didn't phase it at all so went out and got it down with a broom handle. It fled into a weep hole in the house in the laundry room wall. What the frig is it about snakes crawling in our weep holes??????? That happened once before.

I am totally creeped out!

Yeah, that would creep me out to have it in the hole in the house.... ewwwww... sleep with a gun or something. Yuk.

Yes, I am a feminist! I ummm...... I just let deal with snakes so he feels needed. Yes. That's it. I was just thinking of 's ego. :)

That's good, let him believe he's your strong man!!

I categorically deny cringing behind my 9 year old as she happily stared at the snake from a step stool in front of the kitchen window. I am fearless!....... usually. :)

LOL Ann!! Hey, you could have had bbq snake for dinner.... :-D

My house would so be on the market. LOL The lady across the street is facintated with animals to begin with. We occasionally get bears in the neighborhood. I have yet to see one. It would not be a good thing if I did. Now what is a weep hole. Isnt there a way to get it out.

I have been fortunate to not get stuff inside the house except ants and mold. BUT have had mice, bears, fisher cats, deer, porcupine, fox, and other around.

A live draft-stopper.

I probably would have been standing there with them, asking if I could keep

it as a pet!

What's a " weep hole " and is it possible to close it off, or at least put a

vent type thing over it so no snake or other critter can crawl into it?

If you spoke parseltongue you could just tell it to leave. :)

a rake.

That's what you get for tossing clothes *on* the floor in the first place.

LOL

Snakes I can handle - we even had pet garter snakes when Henry was small -

but spiders are my weakness. I'm so allergic to spider bites that one whole

summer as a kid my feet were blown up like balloons and I had to go shoeless

and sockless, as nothing would fit, not even flip-flops. Now when I see any

spider I go the other way and call Ed to whack 'em.

Those Texans probably have loads of recipes for rattlesnake stew. She could

probably substitute the rat snake for the rattler and have it come out all

right.

And *you* live in a more suburban area than I do! Around here we routinely

get opossums and raccoons in the yards, as well as the regular urban

critters - mice, rats, squirrels, and pigeons - getting into attics and

basements. If everybody who ever had an unwanted " guest " sold their house,

nobody would be owning one!

Oh wow a snake!!!!!!!!!! I would have screamed. How did you sleep that night? I hate snakes. There is no way you could even get me to pet one at the zoo. They are so slimy and gross. Gives me the chills just thinking about them. Icky!!! Icky!!! Icky!!! Sorry but just thinking about having one so near is like running fingernails down a chalkboard to me. I do hope that it went away. from MO.

> What's a " weep hole " and is it possible to close it off,

Here in Houston we have mostly brick homes on concrete slabs. The bottom

row of bricks, the ones that sit on the slab, are placed so there's several

bricks side by side then a small gap before the next brick. That allows

moisture to escape from inside the wall. Unfortunately things can crawl in

there even though the gap is less than 1/2 inch. Yuck! The snake was in

the wall between the brick and the drywall. I read that you can stuff steel

wool in the weep hole to keep stuff out. The problem is I don't want to

block anything in that might already be there.

Yes, I'll go to every weep hole around the house and speak parseltongue to

see if any snakes are in there. Great idea! :)

That would be , my annoying husband! :)

Thanks for the explanation of what weep holes are. I guess you guys are like

many Floridians and don't have basements, right?

>I read that you can stuff steel

I had to do that in a few different apartments in the spaces between the

radiator inlet pipe and the floors, as those tiny litle field mice were

getting in. I can keep them out of my apartment, but it's up to each

homeowner to make sure they never get into the house in the first place. In

my m-i-l's house we could only find one tiny little hole in a basement

window screen that was hidden behind a bush, and we only found *that* by

spraying a high pressure water hose along the entire bottom of the house

over and over again until we found one spot that finally leaked. Once we

plugged that up she never had a mouse problem again, no matter how much

demolition and construction was going on in her neighborhood.

It'll die off fast with no food source.

At least your kids and neighbors will get a good laugh. LOL

Nice to have you back Sue. I miss you when you are not around.

Right. We are at sea level and areas of Houston are highly prone to

flooding. We are on the far north side and not prone to flooding thank

goodness.

We've done it around water pipes under sinks for mice.

> It'll die off fast with no food source.

As long as a rat snake doesn't crawl up to our attic. BLECH! On the

internet I've read that some people intentionally put them in their attics

to get rid of rodents.
