Vaccine: No Link to Neonatal Death

The hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) was not a factor in neonatal death in a study

of 1,363 children, said Eileen M. sen of the University of California,

Los Angeles, Center for Vaccine Research, Torrance, Calif., and her

associates. The researchers reviewed cases of 72 HBV-vaccinated neonates

who died between 1993 and 1998. The infants were part of the Southern and

Northern California Kaiser Permanente Health Plan cohort of more than

350,000 live births (Pediatr. Infect. Dis. J. 23[7]:656-61, 2004). The

overall proportion of unexpected deaths was similar between the vaccinated

and unvaccinated groups (31% vs. 35%, respectively). Although the 72

HBV-vaccinated infants died within a month of life, only 22 deaths were

unexpected. However, the immunization rate of neonates who died within the

first month of life was significantly lower compared with those who

survived (5% vs. 66%), which might imply that HBV protects against neonatal

death.
