Guest guest
When my body is acting in this manner, I take some Horsechestnut and Butcher's broom. Helps in just a few days. I also take grapeseed extract to support the blood vessels. mjh " The Basil Book " _http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/_ (http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/) _Cardiomyopathy - could it cause the weight gain? _ (http://us.lrd./_ylc=X3oDMTJwcWFycmxrBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzkxNTc0BG\ dycHNwSWQDMTYwMDA2MTY0NQ Rtc2dJZAM5OTc0NwRzZWMDZG1zZwRzbGsDdm1zZwRzdGltZQMxMTUwNDg2Mjc1;_ylg=1/SIG=1226 c65a4/**/message/99747) Posted by: " annette barclay " _al_barclayuk@... _ (mailto:al_barclayuk@...?Subject=Re: Cardiomyopathy - could it cause the weight gain?) _al_barclayuk _ (al_barclayuk) Fri Jun 16, 2006 9:34 am (PST) Hi everyone, I was thinking again about the weight gain side of ME and CFS. Managed to get out into the sunshine briefly and got asked (yet again) about my " pregnancy " . Could a cardiac problem be causing some of this? I feel so full of water that at times my stomach " swishes " like a hot-water bottle. Read about someone with cardiomyopathy in a newspaper and it mentioned bloating and swelling esp. in the abdomen and the ankles. Could the type of heart problems described by Dr Cheney cause these symptoms? I'm in the UK so that means I'm without access to a Cardiologist who would take this seriously and I cannot afford private care. Here's a snip from one website <snip> What are the symptoms? Shortness of breath during exercise may be the first symptom you notice. As the condition progresses and heart failure develops, you may have difficulty breathing with even slight exertion. You may feel weak and tired. Many people have swollen legs from fluid retention (edema). A buildup of fluid around your liver, stomach, and intestines can cause bloating, nausea, and poor appetite <snip> Kindest regards, Annette

Guest guest
Annette-I am no expert, but I have looked into the cardiomyopathy (CM) symptoms and this is what I believe. If you have some CM, you are going to be by definition less active than you were previosly, so if you don't cut down your calorie intake, you will most definetely gain weight. However, if you look at the symptom list of CM from your message below, poor appetite is one. So that would be good news if your appetite is still good-at least in one sense that your CM isn't too bad, or you don't have CM at all. The bottom line is that if you are less active for whatever reason, you will need to eat less to keep from gaining weight. Mike C. Guest guest
Annette Frequently with supplements as with pharmaceuticals the trick is finding the right dose and the right form and sticking to it long enough to take effect. My five year oddesey with Magnesium really drove that point home to me.-- Sorry these herbs-- Horsechestnut and Butcher's broom-- were not helpful to you. mjh " The Basil Book " _http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/_ (http://foxhillfarm.us/FireBasil/) _Re: Cardiomyopathy - could it cause the weight gain? _ (http://us.lrd./_ylc=X3oDMTJwdjdlNW1iBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE1BGdycElkAzkxNTc0BG\ dycHNwSWQDMTYwMDA2MT Y0NQRtc2dJZAM5OTc3MQRzZWMDZG1zZwRzbGsDdm1zZwRzdGltZQMxMTUwNTQwNjM0;_ylg=1/SIG= 122j2un9k/**/message/99771) Posted by: " annette barclay " _al_barclayuk@... _ (mailto:al_barclayuk@...?Subject= Re: Cardiomyopathy - could it cause the weight gain?) _al_barclayuk _ (al_barclayuk) Fri Jun 16, 2006 2:56 pm (PST) Hi MJH, I've had no luck with those remedies. Guest guest
Hi Mike, Thank you very much for your reply. My appetite is OK nomally but when the abdominal swelling/bloating is particuarly bad it does suffer. The reason I have stopped considering food as THE reason for my swelling/weight gain is that I picked up a bacterial bug a year or so ago. After every meal (and sometimes during) I had severe pain and diahorea. This happened for months and when blood tests were taken my vitamin levels were low. The Gastro I saw couldn't understand why I hadn't lost weight. Everyone around me could understand why I hadn't lost weight as my interest in food plummeted. After particuarly bad bouts of diahorea when I lost a lot of water, my abdomen did got down but my legs and ankles remain very swollen. So, I've given up on the idea that what is happening is " inactivity + food = weight gain " . The other reason I've suspected that it isn't related is because when I was stupid enough to do graded exercise programs I also didn't lose weight. Guest guest
OK, not to alarm you but to me the swelling in your ankles is a troubling sign, maybe of low cardiac output. Have you been put on a diuretic? I am also assuming that your weight gain is not just in your swollen ankles and legs, that it is up higher. I just read somewhere that low metabolism is the reason for fatigue in CFS, so you may be suffering from low CO and low metabolism, which may be related. The issue is very complex, but if I were you I would try to get an answer about your swelling. Additionally, your inability to tolerate any exercise could be due to low CO and/or metabolism issues. This kind of water weight retention can be indicative of both organs in failure. And doctors are notoriously awful at recognizing these conditions in women (we have different symptoms than men -- water retention being one of them -- and since men are the medical " norm, " our unique symptoms are glossed over as insignficant), so we often go completely undiagnosed until very late in the game. There's a great lay summary of the heart issues in CFS at <http:// www.cfids-cab.org/MESA/Cheney.pdf>. Sara
Guest guest
Hi Annette, It's my first time posting-so bear with me if I make a mistake. As I sit here-after a few hours on the computer-sitting in the upright position-I am suddenly suffering one of my own ongoing extreme stomach bloating/swelling episodes. I have been having these bloating/swelling stomach episodes for approximately the last five years of my 17 year bout with fibromyalgia/cfs. The one thing I did different at that time when the first bad bloating episodes began was to take a regimen of antibiotics every day for a " supposed " diagnosis of chronic lyme disease. Now, the first thought for some (and even myself) would seem to be that the antibiotics were the cause-along with possible candida/yeast overgrowth and dysbiosis that is known to possibly follow. I was always (and still am) on a very good probiotic in high amounts though-and never had a womanly yeast infection or thrush the whole time I was on antibiotics. (Still have had no overt yeast infections to this day after four years of antibiotics. Also, my extreme bloating episodes never had anything to do with my eating as many doctors like to mention as the cause. My bloating always had and still comes with activity or use of the body. For example, sitting in the upright position today for too long while on the computer. It doesn't seem like exercise to be sitting up for a few hours-but we forget how much we use all of our body's muscles by sitting up. Of course-add to this the fact of my and most of our conditions-fibromyalgia/cfs. Another example is-I can walk in and out of a few stores or back and forth to the car and be fine for awhile. Then, as happened two nights ago-I walked into a Wal-Mart and after just walking a little more-my stomach swelled out-bam! So, at least for me Anette, it seems to come with being in the upright positions of sitting up and walking. Now, if you read Dr. Cheney's work about the heart problems in folks with cfs-he explains that we do better laying down then upright-(there's a real technical/medical reason for this but I'm so fatigued right now I can't recall-but sure somewhere here can fill us in-or go to Cheney's site and read the heart stuff.) Also, I researched on my own and found out that in some forms of heart problems you will have swelling not only in your feet and ankles-but also in your stomach. Thus, water retention in your stomach can be related to heart problems and I've read that people who have the problem along with their heart problems take diuretics and sometimes loose five to ten pounds of water weight within a few days. Also, I have high Angiotensin II which is not good in the heart realm and researched it and found out that a high level can cause you to retain water also. Well, sorry to go on so long. But though I feel awful for u-it is interesting to know at least one other person out there that is similar to me in this stomach thing. I can literally bloat up to four to six inches extra around my waist in a matter of minutes only due to a little waling or sitting (and not from eating). If you find anything else out let me know. I am going to have my heart checked out next month and hopefully get into a stomach doc also. Keep us posted. Guest guest
Mike, Thank you so much for your replies. It's just such a major problem being in the UK and unable to get any treatment from a ME-friendly doctor. As soon as the NHS hear about M.E. they refuse to do any investigations and they refuse to even make eye contact..... My GP writes a referel letter and it always has a short medical history. I had an idea of someone who may be able to advise. Dr Vance Spence from the charity MERGE was a Vascular Consultant and he may have some ideas. I hate to ask him as he has M.E. himself. Thanks once again. Kindest regards, Annette --------------------------------- All new " The new Interface is stunning in its simplicity and ease of use. Guest guest
Dear Gena, Thank you for taking the plunge with your first email. I'll certainly take more notice of what I do (sitting, lying, walking) and see if that has any bearing on the swelling. I feel as if I'm walking around with a huge hot-water-bottle strapped to my waist and my legs are totally out of proportion to the rest of my body. I don't have ankles, I have " cankles " . Thanks once again for so much to think on Kindest regards, Annette --------------------------------- All New – Tired of Vi@gr@! come-ons? Let our SpamGuard protect you. Guest guest
Hi Anette, Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry about your situation with all of the swelling and know how totally uncomfortable and tiring it can be to deal with. As usual, I awoke without a bloated stomach and then after about thirty minutes of sitting up on computer-bam-mine has swelled up. Keep me posted and see if there is a tendency for your swelling to get better if you lay down and rest for several hours-or, for example, is it better first thing in the morning but worse as the day goes on? I wish there was more I could think of to help other than the info I already gave. Hang in there! Oh, by the way-I'm sure u have already had your thyroid checked (since it can cause water retention problems? Also, do you have cardiomyopathy? If so, what do your docs think of all the swelling? And finally, can you convince a doc to let u try a prescription diuretic? Ok then, take care.
