My son's Dr. who is treating him said that he would not reccomend diflucan

because of the potential to cause Liver damage (Maybe it was kidney but I am

alomost positive it was liver). Anyway I was wondering if any of you have

your kids on diflucan if they have regular blood work done to see if their

liver function is okay, or if they are on L-Carnitine to improve liver

function. Thanks for any input!

Yes, we do regular blood work to include liver panels. Some antifungals such

as Nystatin and Amphotericin B are not absorded into the blood stream so they

are very safe.

My three children have taken diflucan for over a year and there has been no

liver damage (we did blood tests to check liver enzymes every 1-2 months);

the percentage taking diflucan who actually get liver damage is very small.

As long as you are doing the liver enzyme tests there you can feel safe

giving this drug.

Periodic liver function tests are necessary for anyone on Diflucan on a long

term basis. That is true for many drugs. I can think of a lot of other drugs

that I would worry about a lot more than Diflucan. Kathy

My son has been on Diflucan since last December. We are patients of

Dr. goldberg and yes, he has almost monthly (slightly longer than that)

blood tests to help monitor against things like liver damage, etc. It is

my understanding that liver damage is relatively rare but most drugs haven't

been studied on children and Dr. Goldberg is a stickler for the blood tests.

If you fail to get a blood test at the suggested times, then his office will

not

renew prescriptions.
