Hi Ken,

Do you (or others) know whether sunbathing in a sunroom (windows shut, so

through glass) enables vitD to be synthesized through the skin? if yes, how much

(if any) is lost compared to sunbathing outside?

We have a nice sunroom (glass on 3 sides-facing east-south-west) so sun all day

all year round (when sunny of course), but often too cold in Paris to sunbathe

outside. often nice and warm in sunroom if I keep the windows shut.

You must be facing a similar situation where you live, so you might've looked

into this

Sunlight works well if you are under 20. The ability of the body to

produce vitamin D from sunlight at 60 is only 20% of what it is at

20. It does not hurt and definitely helps if you have SAD (and

vitamin D as supplements also help SAD).

This leaves three main choices for getting adequate D (usually 2-

4000 IU/day:

* 1-3 hrs of sunlight every day if you are 20, 5-12 hrs if you

are 60. Note the " EVERY DAY " .

* Vitamin D3 supplements (thus you know exactly how much you are

getting)

* Eating fish (which depends on species -- but it also open up

issues of mercury and other contaminants).

* Cod Liver Oil (or other fish oils) - which is signficantly more

expensive than Vitamin D3. For examp[le (European source)

http://www.healthspan.co.uk/shop/product.aspx?Id=COD1

Per capsule: 90 IU of Vitamin D, this 20-30 cod-liver oil

capsules per day... or ~ £1.50 ($3)/day VERSUS

http://www.healthspan.co.uk/shop/product.aspx?Id=VD-4

so 5 capules per day... or ~ £0.15 ($0.30)/day

See http://www.westonaprice.org/basicnutrition/clarifications.htm

for more sources of Cod-Liver oil.

Nelly:

UV-B is the wavelength that is responsible for starting the

conversion to vitD in the skin. This is also one of the wavelengths

that'll burn you if sunbathing outdoors (it's strongest from 10 am to

2 pm).

But- this wavelength is blocked by glass- so sitting in the sun

indoors (behind glass) isn't going to generate vit D.

Barb

ps

This site has alot of info on UVA and UVB

Thanks Ken and Barb for very speedy responses,

So to sum up:

I'm not 60 yet but I'm not 20, so unless I am willing to sunbake all day long

OUTSIDE (not behind glass and probably IN THE NUDE to get max exposure) no good

trying to rely on sunshine for getting enough D

I eat fish or seafoods at least X2 a week (try to be careful not to eat

extra-large fish, always choose small tuna fish for eg)

I used an all round supplement powder (Sparx by Krysalis

http://www.krysalis-sparx.com/) which has about 400 IU of D3 per serve, but

according to Ken that's only about 1/10 th of what you feel is beneficial

I also take DHA/EPA for omega 3s from fish source but I don't think it has any D

in it

I'll look into gradually increasing D3 by supplementing, but I must admit that

4000 IU seems like a huge amount (I know Ken has really looked into it so maybe

it is necessary)

400 IU/D is what is necessary to prevents Rickettes.

URL's advocating more:

* http://www.mercola.com/2002/feb/23/vitamin_d_deficiency.htm

* http://www.vitamindcouncil.com/

* http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?

cmd=Retrieve & db=PubMed & list_uids=12499343 & dopt=Abstract which

advocates 3000-5000 IU/Day for men at 41.2 degrees N latitude - I

live at 49 degrees, so a lot less sun.

* http://www.lassesen.com/cfids/2000iu.htm my medline links to

benefits of at least 2000 IU/day, major drop in risk of diabetes and

cancer.

I just read a study in the last couple weeks that showed treatment with 10,000

iu's a day of D3 cured TB in patients. So whats considered the 'upper safe

limit' is going up considerably as more and more studies are being done with D

in different health conditions.

I'm not up to 4000iu's myself either. Yes, Ken does research things very well

and I trust his research. I'm a conservative type and always go cautiously

because of problems with so many things in the past. When I got my colds/flu's

this year, it was after having to stop my vites becuase of the urine metals

challenge test, I didn't get to take it when planned so ended up missing my D

for about a month and that was enough to make me sick with colds and flus again,

darn. I'm at about 2400 iu's now, but I need to bump that up even more. I get

very little sun in winter, its cold here and I dont' go out all that much and

there is no skin showing when I do!
