Hi Priti,

My surgery was scheduled for the early morning.  The days before surgery it was

a clear liquid diet.  I could have broth, juice (only apple, nothing red

colored), water.  The pre-surgery check up was blood work and ekg.  Cannot

remember if fasting was requied or not.  Wishing your son all the best, he will

do great!!!

Subject: pre-surgery checkup

Can anyone please let me know what this pre-surgery checkup/test should cover? I

was told only about blood test, forgot to ask if it needs to be a fasting one or

not. I will call them back tomorrow. As the surgery day is coming closer for my

son, starting to get a little nervous. Surgery is scheduled for July 11th. May

God bless him.

He needs to be on liquid diet 2 days before and on clear liquid 1 day before the

surgery. Clear liquids will be chicken broth, jello, Gatorade. What can he take

for the liquid day?

Thanks everyone for being there for us through this rough times.

Fasting for pre-op is usually from midnight the night before the operation. That

means no foood or liquid from midnight the night before.

Though I was not asked to do so, I went on a liquid diet for a couple of days

prior to switching to the required clear liquid diet. I drank 'Boost' (Ensure)

and non-chunky soup during this time.

Post surgery, a friend lent me his 'Vita-mix' blender (see:

http://www.vitamix.com/index.asp). This blender had the ability to liquefy

about anything. If you can get your hands on one of these - great! This would

enable you to expand the pre-surgery menu beyond Boost.

Mind you, by the time I arrived for surgery - after 3 days of liquids - I felt

sort of woosy. I think this was partly due to lack of normal nutrition; goes

with the territory.

The result, however, was WELL worth it!

I was specifically told to stick with yellow (lemon) jello, definitely no red or

orange

You mean no red or orange color Gatorade, jello etc, what could be the reason

for that?

Is blue coloring ok?

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experience.

Thanks , and .

I am just wondering what does red and orange have to do with clear liquids.

Yes, blood test does not require fasting.  I checked today.

Thanks for all your good wishes for my son ..very much needed.  I hope I

have the

strength to get through it.  Will surely update you all with my experience.

Thanks again,

Priti

I think the reason to avoid those bright colors is the staining of tissue, food

coloring.  They want you to stick to things that have less food coloring the

day

before surgery.  The first 3 days of fasting is the worst, once you pass that

point the hunger sensation is not so bad.  He will make up for it once he

begins

to heal, you will see that he will be eating lots of food after a couple

weeks.

Try not to worry, it will be okay!

I believe the idea is that red and orange food coloring could cause your

'insides' to be colored also. Have you ever noticed how your tongue is red after

eating red jello? I would imagine it could color the inside of your E the same

way.

My pre surgery check up wa s alittl more complicated than most. But it sarted

out the same. Blood tests, EKG, lung function and basic vitals. I am sure you

will have to fast the night before giving the blood. I remember doing that.

Unfortunately my EKG came back abnormal and so did my lung tests so I was

referred to a cardiologist and had to have an Echo. I was also referred to a

pulmonologist and had to have a chest Xray and CT scan. They also wanted to do a

broncoscopy on me. It was a terrible nightmare. Turns out all the abnormalities

were caused by my gigantic esophagus pressing on my heart and lungs. Other than

that I was in top physical condition. ha!

As for fasting before the surgery, liquid diet means full liquids so that would

be purees, puddings, yogurt, milk, smoothies, etc.

Since you know what clear liquids are you should be fine. Your son is going to

breeze through this. You are with a great surgeon that knows what he is doing

and should have no fear. I wish you and your son all the best and keep us posted

on his recovery!

No red or orange bcause it can mimic blood and confuse the surgeon that there is

internal bleeding. that is what they told me.

I recently had a colonoscopy and had the same food color rules

for more than 24 hours before the procedure; definitley because

they want nothing to be misteaken for blood.

Purple definitley has red coloring, and different shades of blue

may contain red, so stay away from those also.
