Guest guest
Hi New Member: What is your name? Where do you live. I had a lot of trouble just before my period and then things evened out once I started. Not sure why you have to wait so long for an appointment -- can you nag, call daily for cancellations? Get well first, then get pregnant -- it will get complicated if you don't/ Your symptoms seem severe -- what help can we be to speed you along in treatment? {eggy > > Has anyone found that the swallowing problems become much more severe > during your period? Guest guest
Hurray! I'm not alone. I don't mean to be excited but it's nice to know it's not just me. I had a Heller Back in June '02 and have now had 2 dilations since. I have my most severe swallowing issues around my period and roughly around ovulation. I am also now on Cardizem (or the generic version of it anyway). I've only been on this for a few weeks so I'll have to let you know in a few months if it's helping or not. My severe days lead me to either gagging or even " throwing up " . I say that in quotes because usually nothing but spit or water actually comes up but I can't always control the reflex and get through it without " throwing up " . I'm hoping the steady dose of Cardizem will help. We'll see. I had also had severe trouble swallowing while pregnant both in my pregnancy prior to my Heller and in my subsequent pregnancy. All is well with my now almost 3 and 5 year olds but there were some rough times for me. What are you trying in order to get relief? Guest guest
Yes!!! I thought I was crazy but you have just shown me I am not.. My swallowing problems are MUCH worse which starts about 7 days before my period and then it calms down halfway through my cycle. I did have a few months where the swallowing actually got BETTER with it but those are few and far between most months it's worse.. This month has been HELL... Like my Tags? Join my group! Guest guest
This is a fantastic thread to find...I thought that I was the only one. I have severe spasms about 2 days prior...My doctor put me on Trazadone (mild dose) to help alleviate the spasms, but so far, 3 weeks, I haven't found a difference. In fact I was given niphederine (generic) but all that does is lower my blood pressure. I think I will let me doctor know that this is happening to others when I go back in July. Thank you Crystal RodbournBeverly <bevjames@...> wrote: Hurray! I'm not alone. I don't mean to be excited but it's nice to know it's not just me. Guest guest
It feels really good to be vindicated! My GP gave me the " look " when I said that. She is a great doc but sometimes you can just read the skepticism on the docs' faces when you give them info that doesn't make sense to them. Even when I had my IUD in and had very few periods, I could always tell that one was coming by how my throat behaved. Guest guest
Have you tried Hyacasamine? I may and probably am misspelling that. But that was suggested to me as an alternative to Nifedipine because they used to give me nasty headaches. Hyacasamine didn't work for me, but am told it does work for most and with the added benefit that it doesn't give you the nasty headache. Guest guest
I am SO glad to be talking to others having these same issues. My GI specialist has been very supportive but is as unsure as anyone else as to what will help me. I had a dilation and it most likely resolved the issue of having food stuff get stuck near the base of my esophogus but didn't really touch my periodic spasms. My GI told me that the top 3rd of my esophogus is functioning " normally " so I assume that is where my spasms must be occurring. Having been on a very low dose of Nifedipine (10mg) which I pierced and dripped under my tounge when in the midst of a spasm, I am now on Cardizem (generic version) - lowest dose available. I should know early next week how well it's working since ovulation is coming up then. I'll let you know yeah or nay. I figure I need to give it several months to be sure one way or the other. Let me know if anything is working for any of you. More information is so much better than muddling through on your own. Isn't Trazodone an anti-depressant? Is there any link with that and spasm relief? I've only heard the connection between calcium channel blockers and spasm relief. Good luck all! Guest guest
Could you mean Hyoscamine? WebMD says that is for " This medication slows the activity of the digestive system, thereby reducing cramping and gastric motility. Barbiturates are used for their calming, sedative effects. Used to treat stomach and intestinal disorders, motion sickness premenstrual tension, bed-wetting and urinary frequency. " Of course there are several other drugs with similar names and similar uses. I have no idea what effect these would have on spasms. I'll certainly ask my GI what the possible advantages for me might be. In the WebMD description I don't see just how that would help in relaxing esophogial spasms though nothing out there is specifically designed for that purpose, hence our trials and errors approach to our own health situations. Thanks, Beverly lclopez477 wrote: > Have you tried Hyacasamine? Guest guest
Sorry, completely misspelled it. It's known as Nulev or Hyoscyamine. It was prescribed to prevent or lessen my spasms. But it didn't help me any and so I went back to Nifedipine which definitely works when my hot water trick fails me.
